Update: The number of casualties in the 50-vehicle crash along the Ohio Turnpike is increasing. Now, numbers provided by the Ohio State Highway Patrol show three deaths.

SANDUSKY COUNTY, OHIO: The Ohio State Highway Patrol said on Friday, December 24 that one person was killed and many others were injured in a huge automobile wreck involving 50 vehicles. OSHP Patrol troopers, turnpike staff, and first responders from many agencies turned on the scene of a multi-vehicle incident on the Ohio Turnpike westbound between State Routes 53 and 4 in Sandusky County.

The fatal crash forced the closure of the road both ways while troopers were removing vehicles piled up on the road as per reports. Bus services were used to move people from their stranded vehicles to a local facility.

The Ohio Turnpike closed in both directions with eastbound traffic being diverted off at exit 91 at State Route 53. Westbound traffic is being diverted off at exit 118 at State Route 250, WTOL11 reported. The Sandusky County Sheriff confirmed that a mutual aid request for extraction resources was issued to Toledo Fire & Rescue. As of 3:40 p.m. on Friday, several TFRD crews are on the scene, assisting with the crash and recovery efforts.

Tolendo Fire&rescue Tweeted, "INCIDENT TYPE: Mutual Aid Request - Sandusky County Sheriff INCIDENT DETAILS: (December 23, 2022): TFRD extrication resources are assisting in Sandusky Co with a multiple vehicle accident on the Ohio Turnpike near milepost 118".



 

Ohio State petrol said that the incident was weather-related, "Weather is a factor in the crash. All parties involved in the crash have been moved to a local facility by bus to stay warm," they Tweeted. In the earlier Tweet, they wrote, "Troopers are currently on scene at multiple crashes on the @OhioTurnpike
eastbound between SR 53 and SR 4. The road is closed in both directions and eastbound traffic is being diverted off at exit 91 (SR 53) & westbound traffic is being diverted off at exit 118 (SR 250)." Witnesses also shared pictures of the accident terming it the 'worst incident or car pile up'.
