'Windfall' Ending Explained: Did the robber escape the vacation home?
The highly-anticipated thriller movie ‘Windfall’ has finally arrived on Netflix and it will undoubtedly take you back to the era when Alfred Hitchcock captured the imagination of viewers through riveting movies. The movie revolves around a man (Jason Segel) who breaks into a vacation house of a tech billionaire in order to steal money and some valuable assets.
However, as soon as he thinks of getting out of the house, the billionaire CEO (Jesse Plemons) and his wife (Lily Collins) arrive at the vacation home for a getaway. The robber tries to get out of the house but is seen by the billionaire’s wife. The CEO tries to call his wife from the next room, but she doesn’t respond and when he arrives at the living room area of his house, he sees the man holding his wife as a hostage.

The couple asks the man what does he want from them? The CEO tells him that if he wants money then he can surely do that. Robber makes them sit on the couch and ties their feet so that they don't run away. What does he do next? Let’s find out how the movie concluded.
‘Windfall’ Ending Explained
Before the couple’s arrival, we see the robber stealing money, jewelry, and some more things as well. However, everything goes downhill once the couple arrives. The CEO says that they have a secret compartment where he can find more money for him. The robber takes the CEO with him as he finds the secret compartment. He finds it and gives all the money to him.
He takes the couple to the sauna and locks them up. That’s when we find out that the couple’s married life is not as happy as it looks from the outside. The robber says that they should try running only an hour after he is gone from here. He goes and crosses the fence to sit in his car. However, he soon realizes that there was a CCTV camera there and it has captured everything. He returns to the couple but realizes that they have escaped. He sees them and tells them to stop.
The robber chases them and gets hold of the CEO. After that, they sit and negotiate how much money would be good for a new start. The robber says $150,000, but the couple laughs it off by saying that it won’t be enough. They discuss it with each other and the CEO says $450,000 would be good enough. But the man seals the deal with $500,000. The couple is okay with that and the CEO calls his assistant to immediately transfer the money. But there’s a catch, the money cannot be transferred on the same day because of all the paperwork.
The robber is not happy with that but would have to wait because it’s a big amount. Everyone goes out for a walk in the backyard and starts talking. The robber accused the billionaire’s wife of having it all. But the wife says that everything she has achieved in her life is through her determination. He also asks about the tattoo she is getting removed. She says nothing.
It’s night time and the billionaire tells his wife that she should get closer to the robber so that they can win his trust and give him to the police. The wife is not feeling sleepy and starts talking with the man, telling her how her life really is. She tells him that she thought a lot about marrying the billionaire and had the option of taking a step back to start something of her own. But she decided to take a step forward and walk down the aisle. When the robber asks if that was worth it, she replies, “Ask me again in 30-40 years.” However, when she asks him about his wife, he says nothing.
She walks away and sleeps.
The next morning, while having breakfast, the billionaire asks him if his company did anything wrong with him? The robber says that he knows what he’s trying to do and he should only worry about people who have lost everything because of him. The billionaire gets annoyed and says that he made people’s lives better by making something that created a lot of jobs. He also said that only freeloaders want him to fail because they just sit around and do nothing. He took the opportunity and created something successful. All freeloaders ask for is help, every single time.
His wife gets annoyed as well and asks if he sees her as a freeloader as well because she also asked him for help. The billionaire says that he doesn’t take her as a freeloader because she doesn’t think like that. However, there seems to be a lot of friction among them.
A few moments later, we see the gardener arriving at the house, and the billionaire talks to him. However, while working, he sees the robber and comes inside. The couple says that he is one of the relatives. The gardener insists that the couple should take a look at the garden he created. They liked the garden and appreciated what he did. The gardener gives the billionaire a paper in which he has a new design and writes something on it. The trio goes inside, but the gardener sees what the billionaire has written on the paper.
However, the robber sees the reaction of the gardener as well. He brings him inside. After a few moments, the billionaire gets really irritated and confronts the man for what he is doing. He says that he is not afraid of him and will go out right now. The robber shoots the wall and at that moment, the gardener tries to run away. But he fumbles and gets accidentally killed by going through a glass door.
It’s evening and the money has arrived. The robber says that the wife will go and bring the money. As soon as she reaches the gate, she has the opportunity to walk away from all of this, but she retraces her steps and goes back into the house.
While leaving, he had a conversation with the CEO and told him how rotten and disgusting he is. He wanted to be like him, but when he saw the real him, he was disgusted by it. The robber said that the CEO will always be alone because his wife is taking birth control pills. At the time, the wife was trying to cut the wires that were used to tie her feet.
As soon the robber leaves the front door, he bends down to tie his shoe, the wife manages to get free and attack the robber with a heavy vase. She attacks him again and kills him. She goes inside with a gun that was in the robber’s possession. The CEO is baffled and excited that his wife killed the robber and tells her to untie him. But she doesn't listen and shoots her husband twice. He instantly dies.
The movie ends with the wife finally taking steps into her new life.
