Will there be ‘Fall 2’? Netflix revives survival thriller as Lionsgate reveals what’s next
First it climbed a tower. Now it’s climbing the charts. Out of nowhere, the survival thriller ‘Fall’ is back in the spotlight, years after its theatrical debut. And fans scrolling through Netflix are suddenly asking the same thing: wait, is there a sequel coming or not? Yes. Actually, more than one. ‘Fall’ originally hit theaters in 2022 with modest expectations and a shoestring budget. It opened to $2.5 million its first weekend and landed in 10th place at the box office. But sometimes slow and steady wins the race. The film eventually pulled in $21 million worldwide against a $3 million production cost.
Critics were generally kind, and the film now sits at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, its real second life began once it landed on Netflix. That’s when things got interesting. On February 19, the movie shot up to No. 2 on Netflix’s Top 10 streaming chart in the United States, trailing only ‘Joe's College Road Trip’. Suddenly, viewers who may have skipped it in theaters were pressing play at home. The spike in popularity has only fueled speculation online. Social media threads are full of questions about what’s next. Is there a follow-up? Will the story continue? According to Variety, not one but two sequels are officially in development.
For anyone who needs a refresher, ‘Fall’ is about two friends, Becky and Shiloh, who decide to honor the memory of Becky’s late husband by scaling an abandoned 2,000-foot TV tower in the middle of nowhere. What begins as a bold attempt at closure quickly spirals into a nightmare when the ladder they used to ascend collapses. That leaves them stranded at a dizzying height with limited supplies and no easy way down. The original cast included Grace Caroline Currey as Becky and Virginia Gardner as Shiloh, with supporting performances from Mason Gooding, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Julia Pace Mitchell, and Jasper Cole.
Scott Mann directed and co-wrote the script alongside Jonathan Frank. After the theatrical run and streaming surge, Lionsgate officially announced ‘Fall 2’. The sequel was teased in early 2023 before receiving the green light later that October. The second installment will be directed by Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig, the filmmaking duo known for ‘Jigsaw’. Mann and Frank are returning to handle the screenplay duties. This time, the story will focus on Shiloh’s sister, who will step into the spotlight as the lead character.
The setting? Taipei’s Mount Kwan-in. The mission? A high-risk plank walk. An unforeseen disaster puts her and her friend in serious danger, forcing them into another fight for survival at terrifying heights. New cast members joining the sequel include Harriet Slater, Arsema Thomas, and Tom Brittney. As for ‘Fall 3’? That project is also in development, though specifics are scarce. No official release date has been announced for either sequel, but ‘Fall 2’ is expected to arrive sometime in 2026.
