Was Ellen Barkin married when Johnny Depp relationship became 'sexual'? The truth behind rumors
In Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s current ongoing blockbuster legal drama, a video of Ellen Barkin, who had a fling with Depp in the 90s, was played in court on Thursday, May 19. Barkin’s pre-recorded deposition was presented from Heard’s side while making claims against the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star.
The deposition was filmed in November 2019, which was first played in the 2020 UK libel trial. The testimony from ‘The New Normal’ actor accused Depp of being a “controlling” man who always used to drink and take drugs. “He’s just a jealous man, controlling – ‘Where are you going? Who are you going with? What did you do last night?'” she told the court. She also added: “He was drunk all the, most, a lot of the time.”

Who was Ellen Barkin's husband when she dated Johnny Depp?
As per Barkin, her friendship with Depp began in 1990. She said, “We just developed a friendship over time that lasted maybe 10 years [or] a little less.” However, later, they reportedly got involved sexually after she came to Los Angeles from New York in 1994. At the time, she “was separated from her then-husband, Irish actor Gabriel Byrne,” Page Six reported and also noted, “They dated briefly in the public eye before things fizzled, only to start up a non-exclusive relationship in 1998 while filming ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ together.”
The 58-year-old actor had also talked about their relationship during the UK trial against the publisher of The Sun newspaper, which called him a “wife beater” in a 2018 article titled – ‘Gone Potty: How can J.K. Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting wife beater Johnny Depp in the new ‘Fantastic Beasts’ film?’ He had said: “Ms Barkin and I had been friends for a number of years. A couple of years later (after her divorce) Ellen and I were hanging, just spending time together a relationship.”
Depp had continued at the time: “A sexual element began with Ms Barkin which lasted for months on and off really because she was making the film I was making at the time, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and I suppose her desires were... She wanted more than a relationship, she wanted a proper relationship with me and I did not want that,” before adding: “I didn't feel the same about her as she did me and I suppose from that moment on she became very, very angry and since then I have not spoken to Ms Barkin. Nor has Ms Barkin spoken to me.”
Barkin’s deposition was played two days after Heard finished her testimony on Tuesday, May 17. Mentioning her 2018 op-ed published in The Washington Post that is at the center of the trial, she told the court: “I was talking about a bigger issue than just Johnny… when powerful men do something horrible or that they shouldn’t, how there is a system in place to protect them, to clean up after them. This was a reference to not just Johnny but what was happening as a culture when we were addressing a lot of MeToo issues.”
The 36-year-old actress added: “(It was) not just about him, but he is included in that yes… but I wrote this in the context of many men at the time, public figures in the public eye being accused as well. So it was a reference in general to a larger phenomenon, not just Johnny.”
