HOUSTON, TEXAS: A 35-year-old man was shot dead outside a Texas home last Friday, January 22, after he went to confront the parents of a teenage boy who had allegedly been cyberbullying his 15-year-old daughter. According to the police, Brandon Curtis was shot in self-defense after he allegedly hit a juvenile, however, his family disputed the claim.

Harris County Sheriff, Ed Gonzalez tweeted when he arrived on the scene, "I’m on the scene. Very preliminary info: a physical altercation broke out between several teens. One adult entered the fray. A separate adult retrieved a pistol and shot the male. One adult male is deceased. Investigation is underway. #HouNews"

Gonzalez later tweeted an update, writing, "Update to shooting at Spring Brook Pass: Brandon Curtis, an adult male, had gone to the location w his juvenile daughter so she could fight other juveniles. During the fight, several other people, including juveniles became involved in the fight. Curtis joined the fight & is reported to have struck one of the juveniles several times."

He continued, "The juvenile’s brother J. Richardson, a resident at the location, observed this happening & shot Curtis in defense of his brother. Curtis was pronounced deceased. Investigation into the incident will continue & upon completion, the case will be presented to a Harris County Grand Jury at a later date. #HouNews."

However, Curtis's wife and sister dispute the Sheriff's claim. Curtis's wife, Shantal Harris told ABC13, "I don't feel like it's right to let that come out like that. I'm angry. I'm angry about it." She added, "I know my husband. My husband is not like that." Curtis's sister, Jeran Perkins agreed with Harris, telling ABC13, "My brother would never put a hand on a child. We want justice."

Harris told ABC13 that her 15-year-old daughter had been bullied on social media by the same teenage boy for nine months. Harris also shared some of the profanity-laced messages with ABC13. According to Harris, she and Curtis spoke with the boy's father about it a few months ago. On the fateful evening, her husband, daughter, and son left to address the issue again. Harris explained, "When he left from here, my husband went to go resolve the issue. He wanted to go speak to the parent."

However, Curtis never came home. The confrontation turned violent once Curtis was outside the boy's home. According to investigators, a 20-year-old man told Curtis hit his teen brother. The man then got a gun to protect his brother and shot Curtis, who died at the scene. The sheriff's office said they did not charge the man and the case will be referred to a Harris County grand jury.

According to ABC13, Harris said that her daughter received a message that read, "we all had a fight and killed dey (sic) daddy."

Robinique Miles, Curtis's sister, told the outlet, "They think it's a joke." Harris added, "For them to claim self-defense, it's sickening." Curtis's family wants the man who shot him charged. Curtis was a commercial truck driver, who worked tirelessly to provide for his family, according to ABC13.
