Paige DeAngelo, a 20-year-old student from Pennsylvania was born with two uteruses and vaginas. This condition is called uterine didelphys and is a rare congenital abnormality. In a female fetus, the uterus starts out as two small tubes and as the fetus develops, the tubes called Müllerian ducts join to create a large hollow organ. However, there are times when the tubes don't join completely and each of them develops into a separate structure. According to a report by Mayo Clinic, a double uterus may have one opening (cervix) into one vagina, or each uterine cavity may have a cervix. In some cases, a thin wall of tissue runs down the length of the vagina, dividing it into two separate openings.

Being born with two fully-functioning reproductive systems means DeAngelo gets double periods. This also means she could be pregnant in one of her uteruses but continue bleeding from another. The realization of being pregnant wouldn't dawn on her until she has other symptoms and there are chances that she could get pregnant in both wombs at the same time. DeAngelo's condition was only diagnosed when she turned 18. Jennifer Ashwood from England was born with the same condition and in March 2020 she gave birth to twins but they were born from separate wombs.

Who is Paige DeAngelo?

DeAngelo's Instagram and LinkedIn page reveals she is a student at Drexel University since 2019 and is pursuing a degree in Communications and Media Studies. She is a member of the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority. She is also studying to be a weather anchor at the Mississippi State University. She is the host of the news show 'Inside Ambition' on DUTV. DeAngelo also launched her beauty brand Paige Leigh Beauty in Spring 2021.

Coming back to DeAngelo's condition, a report states that both of her wombs experience a regular menstrual cycle. She visited her gynecologist for the first time at age 18 but she experienced irregular periods and got one every two weeks for years before that. A routine checkup revealed a much complex condition and after examining her, DeAngelo's doctor advised her to call her mother, Carol Ann VanAuken, to the clinic. "I always had a very irregular period but it was actually two cycles switching on and off. Sometimes it would be once a month and other times it would be twice a month, only a couple weeks apart," she said

DeAngelo is working toward spreading awareness about her condition after realizing women with uterine didelphys are at a much higher risk of premature births or miscarriages because the uteruses are much smaller. She uses her page on TikTok as a means to educate people who have queries about her condition and has garnered close to 300,000 followers. She has also found support within a community of women and mothers who live with the condition. I'm in a Facebook support group with girls that have the condition and a lot of them have one child every five miscarriages. It disheartening but I'm kind of glass half full person - the fact that people have had kids is what keeps me going," she added.

DeAngelo also uses her account to quash misconceptions about her condition for instance there are many who assume both of her vaginas are visible on the exterior of her body. She says her diagnosis would have been much earlier if it were the case. "People think [I have] two separate vaginas on the outside [of my body] but that is not the case which is why I didn't find out for 18 years. Each 'side' is half the size of a normal vagina. It doesn't cause any issues but it's definitely noticeable," she said. DeAngelo is in a relationship with a fellow student and also assured she has a normal sex life. "I have a boyfriend right now and everything works in that sense!" she said.
