'Resident Evil' finally drops its first trailer and video-game adaptation is releasing sooner than you think
Sony Pictures Entertainment recently dropped the first full-length trailer for the upcoming 'Resident Evil' live-action adaptation film. Based on the immensely popular Capcom video game series of the same name, the upcoming 'Resident Evil' film adaptation is directed by Zach Cregger of 'Weapons' fame. Cregger also co-wrote the screenplay in association with Shay Hatten. As the trailer provides a glimpse into the horror flick, it becomes readily apparent that Cregger's vision of 'Resident Evil' is distinct from all previous live-action adaptations in the franchise and from the short-lived Netflix TV series as well.
The new 'Resident Evil' trailer begins with Austin Abrams, playing a medical courier executive by the name of Bryan. The official synopsis reveals that Bryan "unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos." It further reveals a plethora of the most grotesque and uncanny monsters from the horror game franchise, and they really do appear scarier than the run-of-the-mill zombies players of the video games are familiar with. As of this writing, it has been confirmed that the upcoming movie will not feature any of the popular characters from the 'Resident Evil' franchise, such as Jill Valentine and Leon S. Kennedy, and will project a completely new storyline set in the world of the games.
Alongside Abrams, the 'Resident Evil' movie also stars Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis, and Zach Chery. Hatten, the co-writer of the movie, has previously worked on 'Army of the Dead' and 'John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.' Cregger brings his unique vision to the movie and has been steadfast in his approach to avoiding any influence from the franchise's preceding titles. According to a report by Polygon, Cregger hasn't watched any of the previous 'Resident Evil' films. Speaking in an interview last year, he explained, "(The) journey you'll have as a viewer of watching this movie is going to be similar to the journey you have as a player when you play these games. And what that means is it follows one protagonist from point A to point B as they just descend deeper and deeper and deeper into Hell."
He further added that the upcoming movie "feels in line with my sensibility, has my sense of tone, and it's just a much bigger scale than 'Weapons' and certainly Barbarian." 'Resident Evil' was originally released on PlayStation in 1994 and later ported to other platforms. In the past, there have been a total of six 'Resident Evil' films featuring Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez. All in all, the franchise has raked in $1.2 billion at the box office, according to a Variety report. The upcoming 'Resident Evil' movie opens in theatres on September 18, 2028, in IMAX.
