‘Spider-Verse’ spin-off ‘Spider-Punk’ gets a promising update and there’s big news about a ‘Gwen’ film too

‘Spider-Punk’s solo film gets a fresh update as Sony quietly moves forward with Daniel Kaluuya set to return as Hobie Brown.

Sony’s animated universe is still expanding, and the much-talked-about ‘Spider-Punk’ solo project is very much alive. About six months after it was first revealed, the studio has offered a small but comforting progress report, and yes, Daniel Kaluuya is still in the picture. The Oscar winner, who brought Hobie Brown to life in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’, remains attached to return for the spin-off. He is also expected back in the upcoming third main installment, ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’. For anyone who needs a quick refresher, ‘Spider-Punk’, also known as Hobie Brown, hails from New London, Earth-138. He carries a guitar instead of the usual brooding energy.

He gained his powers years before the events of ‘Across the Spider-Verse’. His bond with Gwen Stacy, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, and Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore, turned him into a breakout favorite almost overnight. Right now, details about the spin-off  are being kept tightly under wraps. There is no confirmed release date. There is no story outline available to the public. And there is no clarity on where the project will fit within the larger timeline, especially since Hobie recently teamed up with Gwen and a group of spider-heroes preparing to rescue Miles from a dangerous alternate universe.

Still, there are signs of forward movement. Back in December, Kaluuya shared an encouraging note with Deadline, revealing that the script’s first draft is in its “finishing stages.” He hinted that the new film would “build upon the character Kaluuya played in 2023's ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’.” More recently, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson, who offered another small update. She confirmed the studio is actively developing both the ‘Spider-Punk’ project and a separate ‘Spider-Gwen’ feature. When pressed for specifics, Belson kept things short and careful, saying, “I'm not allowed to say. But we are active on both.”

At this stage, the only other creative name publicly linked to the ‘Spider-Punk’ film is co-writer Ajon Singh. Whether other familiar ‘Spider-Verse’ characters will swing into Hobie’s solo outing remains a mystery. Given how interconnected the animated films have been so far, fans are already guessing about possible cameos. Nothing official, though. Not yet. Meanwhile, attention also remains fixed on ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’, the third chapter in Sony’s animated saga. The film will pick up right where its predecessor left off.

Gwen is assembling a rescue squad that includes Hobie, Pavitr Prabhakar, Margo a.k.a. Spider-Byte, Peni Parker, Spider-Noir, Spider-Ham, Peter B. Parker, and even Mayday. Their mission? Travel to Earth-42 and save Miles after he was sent to the wrong universe. Production on the third film has not been without bumps. The movie was originally slated for a 2024 release but faced multiple schedule shifts, partly due to industry-wide strikes and internal adjustments. In August 2025, Shameik Moore posted on social media that he had started recording dialogue. Even so, the release date changed again. It is now set for June 20, 2027.
