Peacock’s ‘The Paper’ is preparing to return to the newsroom with a new set of reporting problems, workplace tensions, and a romance the staff may already have noticed. The official Season 2 trailer places the Toledo Truth Teller team back at work after sweeping the Ohio Journalism Awards. Ned Sampson is now looking for a story that can keep the newspaper’s momentum going, but his next target could put the publication at risk. The footage also shows that winning awards has not made the team much better at keeping secrets or staying out of trouble.

‘The Paper’ Season 2 will premiere on Peacock on Wednesday, September 9, with all episodes arriving at once. The story appears to pick up soon after the Season 1 finale, which ended with Ned and Mare Pritti sharing their first kiss. In the trailer, the pair tries to keep their developing relationship away from their co-workers as they return to the newsroom. Nicole, played by Ramona Young, sees through the attempt and tells the documentary crew, “I think it’s pretty obvious what’s happening. Mare has a new best friend.” The trailer is the first extended look at the episodes following Peacock’s earlier release of first-look images.

Peacock’s official synopsis reads, “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch in the Emmy Award-winning series 'The Office' finds a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it. In season two, after sweeping the Ohio Journalism Awards, Ned searches for a journalistic crusade, coming for a local private club and jeopardizing the paper, while he and Mare try to figure out their attraction, Esmeralda struggles to find her place, and the staff gradually mature as reporters."

That investigation gives Ned a new journalistic crusade after the newspaper’s award win. Elsewhere, Adelola and Travis, played by Gbemisola Ikumelo and Eric Rahill, chase a possible tornado, placing the reporters in the middle of another assignment that quickly gets out of hand. The trailer also shows Jon Lovitz in a guest role, while Andy Richter, Lisa Gilroy, Matt Braunger, Toks Olagundoye, and Phil Hendrie are among the season’s other guest stars.

Domhnall Gleeson returns as Ned alongside Chelsea Frei as Mare and Sabrina Impacciatore as Esmeralda. Melvin Gregg, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key, Oscar Nuñez, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Eric Rahill, and Duane Shepard Sr. are also back. Nuñez again plays Oscar Martinez, providing the series’ direct character connection to ‘The Office,’ whose documentary crew turns its attention to the Toledo newspaper in the spinoff. Greg Daniels and Michael Koman remain the co-creators and showrunners, with ‘The Office’ creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant among the executive producers.
