What happened on 'The Voice' Season 23 Episode 14?
As the Knockouts came to a close in Episode 12, eight artists advanced, with six winning their contests and Kelly and Blake each stealing a contestant from the other's team. The question remains -- which four artists from Team Blake and Team Chance will make it to the semi-finals?
The night began with a powerful performance from Team Blake's NOIVAS, a soulful rock artist that Blake sees as a rising star. Despite warning NOIVAS about his high-energy approach to hitting big notes during rehearsals, Blake was impressed with his performance of 'Come Together'. Chance praised NOIVAS for turning the stage into his own concert and Kelly predicted he would make it to the finale. Blake concluded by saying that NOIVAS' wildness as a performer worked in his favor and set a high bar for the others.
Next up was Team Chance's Kala Banham, the artist he stole from Kelly and Niall's teams. Kala chose 'My Funny Valentine' to return to her love of jazz music, and Chance was visibly moved during rehearsals. Despite already being emotional, Chance asked Kala to sustain her vibrato a little more. Blake called Kala's performance "perfect" and urged Chance to advance her to the next level. Niall believed the song was made for Kala and Kelly appreciated its "dark, but inspiring" tone. Chance expressed his pride in what Kala had accomplished.
Blake Shelton brought Rachel Christine to the stage next, referring to her as the "alternative dark horse" on his team, where she performed her version of 'The Only Exception'. During rehearsals, Rachel expressed surprise at making it this far and appreciated the guidance provided by Blake in the studio, which set her on a good path to the Playoff stage. Blake emphasized the importance of consistency in the song and praised Rachel for swinging for the fence and doing an incredible job. While Chance The Rapper acknowledged a few pitchy moments, he also noted Rachel's good control and use of the stage. Kelly complimented Rachel's "big and open" voice and praised her performance. Niall appreciated the theatrical version of the song, which felt different.
Next, Jamar Langley took the stage for Team Chance, performing 'The Thrill Is Gone'. Chance expressed confidence in Jamar and encouraged him to unlock his "swag" on stage, incorporating his guitar playing in the performance. Kelly was ecstatic about the performance, calling Jamar "cool". Blake noted that Jamar's strength may not lie in his vocals compared to the rest of the team, but he brings something different that Chance should embrace. Niall appreciated Jamar's comforting and familiar voice on stage. Chance praised Jamar for showing up and making a strong case for himself to advance.
Grace West, the last country artist for Team Blake, appropriately chose 'Love Is Alive' as her song. Blake commended Grace's classic 80's country style and noted that while the song was new for her, it was in the style that she has made a name for herself in on the show. Niall expressed his admiration for Grace since the beginning of the show and believes that she has a bright future in country music. Chance applauded her authenticity and saw her as the best choice for Blake to win the show. Kelly, while a fan of Grace's flawless music, believed there was a better song she could have sung this week. Blake stood by their song choice for Grace and viewed her as a unique and young artist he was proud of.
Manasseh Samone, Chance's Playoff Pass recipient, performed the contemporary Christian song 'Speak the Name'. Manasseh shared how her faith has supported her through her brother's struggle with HIV/AIDS. Chance believed that she was the perfect person to bring gospel and worship songs to the stage. Niall sensed some nerves but appreciated the passion shown in the performance. Kelly believed in the performance because Manasseh believed in it, and Blake acknowledged some shaky parts but also thought she closed the performance strongly. Chance saw the performance as emotionally important and that Manasseh embodies the qualities of a 'Voice' artist and "feels very ordained".
Team Blake returned with Kylee Dayne's impressive performance with 'Flowers', showcasing her remarkable vocal range. Blake expressed his appreciation for the contemporary pop artist's ability to create a sound that could easily be played on the radio. In rehearsal, Kylee presented some new ideas for the arrangement, which included her playing the guitar more independently. Despite her lack of experience, Blake admired Kylee's vision for herself. Chance the Rapper complimented Kylee's song choice and believed that her performance made it difficult for Blake to make a decision. Kelly also praised Kylee's vocal runs, though she sensed some hesitation from Kylee based on her facial expressions at the end of the performance. Niall appreciated Kylee's willingness to take risks by choosing newer songs. During a discussion with Blake, Kylee revealed that she had been affected by nerves during her performance, which led to her expression of self-doubt at the end.
Ray Uriel made a unique song choice with 'Essence', which he believed would stand out due to its uptempo nature unlike the ballads he had previously performed. Ray collaborated with Chance during rehearsals to convey the desired atmosphere he wanted on stage, incorporating background vocalists to make it a song that would entice people to dance. Chance suggested slowing down some parts of the song while still retaining its distinctive character. The arrangement of the song impressed Kelly, who praised Ray's angelic voice and smooth, sweet tone despite its occasional breaks. Blake also commended Ray's ability to sing pop music in a style reminiscent of the 90s, which he hoped to see make a resurgence in contemporary music. Niall echoed these sentiments, describing Ray as captivating and noting the purity of his tone. Chance expressed pride in Ray's growth and emergence from his shell throughout the competition.
During the latest episode of the singing competition, Blake's Playoff Pass recipient Mary Kate Connor took the stage to perform 'If I Die Young'. Aspiring to be a Broadway performer, Mary Kate brought theatricality to the dramatic song and showcased her theater skills. Blake appreciated the song choice but offered feedback on the need to balance her head voice and chorus parts. Kelly praised Mary Kate's storytelling abilities and recognized her strength in creating an intimate connection with the audience. Niall noted the sweetness in Mary Kate's performance, and Chance commended her for taking risks and showing vulnerability as an artist. Ultimately, Blake felt that Mary Kate had delivered an authentic message, which was the most crucial aspect of her performance.
Wrapping up the performances was Team Chance's Sorelle, a harmonics-driven trio who carved their lane this season. They performed 'Something's Got a Hold on Me', with one member drawing comparisons to Christina Aguilera's voice. While Chance felt that there were too many solo parts, he pushed the group to focus on their strength in harmonizing. Blake jokingly expressed his amazement at the group's perfection and appreciated their solo moments. Niall praised Sorelle's insane energy and tight harmonies, while Kelly recognized their uniqueness in the competition. Chance was impressed with the group's consistent ability to deliver show-stopping performances while being receptive to feedback.
During the results segment of the latest episode, Carson Daly asked Team Blake for the decisions. Blake expressed pride in his group for his final season but also apologized for the upcoming decision. Among his team members, Blake chose NOIVAS as the first artist to advance to the Top 8 due to his impressive and passionate performances. His second pick was Grace West, whom he considered the epitome of "pure country" and a "real deal" artist.
Chance, on the other hand, described his team as a collection of artists that he can proudly stand behind, thanks to their genuine love for music. He then announced Sorelle as the first artist to proceed to the next round, citing their unique and outstanding qualities. The second artist that Chance sent to the Top 8 was Ray Uriel as he saw the immense potential in both his artistic and writing abilities.
