Vince Gilligan's 'Pluribus' continues to leave fans in a tizzy. Episode 5 of the Apple TV sci-fi drama released early on the streamer and saw the aftermath of Carol's (Rhea Seehorn) failed attempt to drug Zosia (Karolina Wydra) to see how she could reverse the effects of those in the world becoming a hive mind. In the episode "The World" hits reset by clearing all the bodies out of  Albuquerque in a bid to make space.

Gilligan's brilliance is seen when he drops a subtle Easter Egg in the form of a sly milk reference. In the latest chapter, Carol notes that public recycling bins are primarily filled with milk cartons of a brand. She investigates the factory to find mass production of a strange liquid, prompting her to send out video messages to the remaining survivors unaffected by the virus.

The clever implication is that the hive mind is making the grade on processed human bodies. This comes after the established narrative of the story, where hundreds of millions died in the melee of human minds taken over. If the milk is indeed made of humans, it is a subtle nod to a kind of cannibalism.

Earlier, Wydra decoded Carol's botched attempt to drug her. "It’s fascinating, because Zosia is the collective. So it’s not just Zosia, it’s the whole world that feels, what would I say? Betrayed. There’s a level of betrayal, for sure, that happens,” Wydra told Decider in an interview. "[Carol’s] intention was not to cause the damage that was happening, but it went to a really, really heavy place. And after that, I think it definitely takes time. It’s going to take time for trust to come around and tread softly to make sure that no one gets hurt."

She also delved deeper into Episode 4.  "It was very, very hot the day we shot, being out in the sun in the desert in Albuquerque," she said. "It was pretty unnerving when you heard all those people chanting and coming in closer and closer. The whole world is crying, but it’s crying because we made her so unhappy. It’s a wild concept, right?"

"Because you don’t see the Others get emotional. They don’t have negative emotions. They’re just a distant memory, because they’re so happy, and joyous, and content, and unflappable. So for Carol to take us to the point where we feel such sadness, it’s a huge moment. The chanting was just very unsettling. Like, ‘whoa!’ It was so intense."

'Pluribius' Episode 6 releases 5 on Apple TV.
