On February 4, 2021, GOP Rep. Nancy Mace, 43, and Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), 31, got into a heated back-and-forth on Twitter after the former accused AOC of exaggerating the level of danger she felt during the January 6 riot on the Capitol. AOC had previously recounted her story on Instagram live and claimed a mob banged at her door as her peers told her to hide. As per Mace, AOC has reportedly exaggerated the entire Capitol Hill break-in story.

During her Instagram Live session, AOC talked about the day when the riot took place. She said that a man came into her office unannounced and yelled, "Where is she?" AOC first thought that the man was an insurrectionist, but he later turned out to be a Capitol Police officer. After AOC recounted her story, Mace had called her out over how AOC “feared for her life” when she heard knocks on her office door during the January 6 Capitol breach.

As per Mace, her office is two doors down from AOC’s office, and no one even made it to their hallway, let alone knocking on her door. CNN pointed out that AOC never mentioned she saw any insurrectionists in the hallway or the office but did recount having her office door banged on.

Nancy Mace’s professional life and net worth:

Before we get into the heated argument between AOC and Mace, let us learn more about Mace's professional life.

In 2008, Mace started a small business called ‘The Mace Group’. The consulting firm provided varied web and public relations services to several clients. In 2014, Mace received the ‘Young Alumnus Award’ from the Citadel Alumni Associations. She has also tried her hands in writing a successful non-fiction book, ‘Company of Men: A Woman at The Citadel’. From September 2015 to August 2016, she also served as coalitions and field director for Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign in South Carolina.

In September 2017, Mace filed as a Republican to run in a special election for the South Carolina State House District 99 seat. She received 49.5 percent of the vote but was 13 votes short of winning the nomination outright. Later in the November runoff, she defeated councilman Mark Smith by acquiring 63 percent of the vote. Mace is the first Republican woman to be elected to Congress from South Carolina.

As per reports, Mace has an estimated net worth of $3 million. Mace’s primary income source is credited to her career as a businesswoman.

AOC vs. Nancy Mace

After Mace’s recent statements surfaced online where she blasted media coverage, AOC responded to her by saying, “This is a deeply cynical & disgusting attack, @Nancy Mace. As the Capitol complex was stormed and people were being killed, none of us knew in the moment what areas were compromised. You previously told reporters yourself that you barricaded in your office, afraid you’d be hurt.”

On January 7, Mace shared a video on her Twitter while writing, “Just evacuated my office in Cannon due to a nearby threat. Now we’re seeing protestors assaulting Capitol Police. This is wrong. This is not who we are. I’m heartbroken for our nation today.” After facing the latest media backlash, AOC retweeted Mace’s video and wrote, “This was what you were saying just a few weeks ago. Now you’re contradicting your own account to attack me for Fox News clicks. It’s honestly pretty sad to see you turn around like this and throw other people under the bus. Thought you’d be better.”

After it was alleged that AOC was not present in the Capitol building, she tweeted: "This is the latest manipulative take on the right. They are manipulating the fact that most people don’t know the layout the Capitol complex. We were all on the Capitol complex - the attack wasn’t just on the dome. The bombs Trump supporters planted surrounded our offices too."
