Why is 'Alexandria Ocasio Smollett' trending? How K-pop fans tweet-bombed to stop pro-Trumpers trolling AOC
Twitter went into a frenzy after news surfaced that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was not at Capitol Hill during the Capitol Riots on January 6, 2021. The information, originally floated by Conservative publication RedState, was quickly projected by right-wing supporters all over social media, who flooded Twitter with AOC memes and jibes. The entire uproar was around the fact that this claim was in stark contrast with AOC’s previous narration of her ‘near-death’ experience during the Capitol riots.
Republican politician Nancy Mace tweeted against AOC's claims to accuse AOC of falsehood. ".@AOC made clear she didn’t know who was at her door. Breathless attempts by media to fan fictitious news flames are dangerous. My office is 2 doors down. Insurrectionists never stormed our hallway. Egregious doesn’t even begin to cover it. Is there nothing MSM won’t politicize?" Mace tweeted.

Right-wingers and Conservatives wasted no time in terming AOC's claims as dubious and false. Soon enough the hashtag #AlexandriaOcasioSmollet started trending, drawing similarities between AOC and actor Jussie Smollet, who had reportedly staged a hate crime against himself and falsely named MAGA supporters for it. There were even morphed photos floating around. "#AlexandriaOcasioSmollet AOC was there when the Hindenburg caught fire!!!" ridiculed another user.

How did K-pop fans bring it down?
While one part of the Twitter population left no stones unturned in propelling the hashtag to the top and slamming AOC, the steady follower base of AOC teamed up with K-pop fans to bring down the trolls with positive appreciation posts. "Hey do you love bunnies #AlexandriaOcasioSmollet" wrote one, sharing this gif. "#AlexandriaOcasioSmollet Shinee, one of my favorite. Miss sweet Jonghyun," wrote another.

K-pop fans are well-known for their past efforts to shut down right-wingers time and again. Recently, just after President Joe Biden had taken oath and assumed office, the hashtag #ImpeachBidenNow was trended by Trump supporters. It was soon successfully destroyed by K-pop fans with their appreciation posts, gifs, and videos of K-pop icons. This time, they came to the rescue of AOC. "ten's birthday is coming up on the 27th, everyone plan accordingly," reminded one K-pop fan, along with the hashtag.
