New York Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney triggered outrage after he suggested families eat Chef Boyardee's canned pasta during a discussion on inflation. "I grew up in a family where if the gas price went up, the food price went down, so by this time of the week we’d be eating Chef Boyardee if that budget wasn’t gonna change – So that’s what families have to do," he said during an interview with Westchester's Halston Media.

Former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said on Monday, November 7, that Maloney's comments summarize the election in one sentiment from the left. "I think if you could put the entire election cycle into one clip, it would have been this one about Chef Boyardee -- because [Maloney] is in charge of getting other Democrats elected," she said. "This election is about the inflation and the economy."

Maloney also suggested that to curb inflation, one could cap seniors' out-of-pocket Medicare expenses and negotiate to lower prescription costs. "That's long overdue. In addition to that, we've released 90 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, that's what's taken about $1.30 off the price of a gallon of gas," he said. "That's a big help. We've got to do more to keep that price from going back up and keep it coming down."

What does ‘eat Chef Boyardee’ mean?

Chef Boyardee is an American brand of canned pasta products. It is sold internationally by Conagra Brands, a company that was founded by Italian immigrant Ettore Boiardi in Milton, Pennsylvania. Back in 2018, it was found that Chef Boyardee got a premium remake with higher-quality ingredients, bringing with it a higher price tag to match.

Maloney's opponent,  Assemblyman Michael Lawler, R-Suffern, said Maloney must be “hopelessly out of touch with Hudson Valley families struggling to put food on the table.” “He may think it’s funny to tell families to live on Chef Boyardee, but in reality it’s tragic. The food and energy inflation Mr. Maloney caused in Washington is leaving families scared, hungry, and cold,” he said, according to New York Post. Lawler said he had a "better idea". "Let's fire Sean Maloney and reduce inflation," he said.

Social media is furious after Maloney's Chef Boyardee comment, with one saying on Twitter, "These Democrats are so arrogant. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, suggested that we, who are suffering at the pump should eat Chef Boyardee. The arrogance that we should manage our budget, because the government can’t is astounding." Another user said, "Idiot congresses Maloney said bc of inflation, people will just need to eat Chef Boyardee! It’s what families have to do" if they find themselves in financial hardship. This is the typical democrat who does NOT CARE ABOUT THE STRUGGLES OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE !!!" "Democrat Campaign Chief Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) says to eat Chef Boyardee if inflation is bad. Their nonchalant attitude is disgusting, and I hope they get their paybacks on Tuesday!!" commented one user.

"Sean Maloney Democrat from NY 18th District said that families struggling with the economy should buy Chef Boyardee. Dems are out of touch with the average American," one user wrote, while another said, "Ask yourself before you cast you vote tomorrow. - if you think Democrat Rep Sean Maloney is eating chef Boyardee in a can ?" One commented, "Maloney is full of baloney. Go to hell & take your Boyardee with you. You eat like kings you hypocrite Rep. Maloney recalls 'eating Chef Boyardee' as kid during inflation talk, says it's 'what families have to do'."
