Wayne and Elena Couzens: What happened to their children? The aftermath of chilling Sarah Everard murder mystery

It's strange to understand such psychopaths or serial killers with smiling children and seemingly perfect marriages, isn't it? Not only Bundy, but a few others are also namely HH Holmes, John Wayne Gacy, Andrew Cunanan, The Golden State Killer Joseph James DeAngelo, Dennis Nilsen, Albert Fish, and many more.

The recent Sarah Everson case — with Wayne Couzens as the alleged murder suspect — is one such instance.

What happened to Wayne Couzens?

Sarah Everard's case is still under investigation and details have not been entirely revealed. It is, however, speculated that Wayne — an officer with the Diplomatic and Parliamentary Protection Command — reached out to ask for Everard's identification and lured her before kidnapping and killing her. It is unclear if his wife, Elena, had any role to play in it.

He lived with his wife Elena and their two young children at his semi-detached home in Deal, Kent for four years. After the horrific allegations, kidnap and murder charges, Couzens is in custody awaiting an appearance at the Old Bailey after the 33-year-old Sarah disappeared from Clapham Common, south London, on March 3. 

Now, the question remains: What happened to his wife and children and where are they now? 

Where did Wayne and Elena Couzens live?

A lab technician, Elena Couzens married Couzens in 2006 after they met in Switzerland, where she was working. Born in Ukraine, the scientist got a first-class degree in biochemistry at the University of Donetsk in Donetsk, Ukraine. If reports are to be believed, she previously worked at a Boots Opticians in Canterbury, Kent. 

After their marriage, the couple lived in the top floor flat of a converted period property in Folkestone. Shannette Roy, their landlady, described Wayne as “a nice fellow” and said, “The only thing I found strange was when he said he was going over to Ukraine to get his wife and he brought her back. She didn’t speak very good English.”

The pair lived in their Freemen’s Way house with their two children and a pup dog, according to their neighbor. The two reportedly bought the three-bedroom house in 2015 for $2,77,400 (£200,000). 

Where is Elena Couzens now?

At approximately 11.59 pm on March 9, 2021, Elena Couzens was arrested along with Wayne on suspicion of assisting an offender in the mysterious kidnapping and murder of Sarah Everard. The 33-year-old marketing executive from South London was last seen alive in Clapham, London on March 3, 2021.

Elena was later released on bail. Recently, the mother-of-two, 39, was spotted in public after the firearms police officer was charged with murder. According to photos released by Daily Mail, “she was wearing glasses, a smart blue top trousers while clutching a book about Albert Einstein and two bags of belongings.”

Elena's mother Nina Sukhoreba slammed social media users after they left horrific messages on her daughter and son-in-law's Facebook accounts, which has now been taken down. “Have they never heard of presumption of innocence?” she told the outlet from her Kirovograd, Ukraine, home, adding, “I am very surprised how the Western people have behaved. How can they write such horror about my family?”

Where are Wayne and Elena Couzens' children now? 

In 2006, Wayne and Elena Couzens got hitched and built a family after giving birth to their daughter in 2010 and their son in 2012. Soon after the cop was arrested, social media was buzzing with concerned users who worried about their children. 

On March 13, singer Steve Brookstein wrote, “#WayneCouzens has been charged so have to be careful what you tweet. My heart goes out to his two children. They are going to need so much help to get through this. Devastating.” Another said, “Allegedly - CRETIN Wayne Couzens never stopped to think about Sarah, her life, her family & friends, nor did he stop to think about the lives of his two primary school children that’ll never be the same again. Just so long as he got his kicks, that was his overriding thought.”

As of now, there is no information about where his kids are, but reports said Elena had returned back to them after getting released.

‘Pictures give me the chills’

Appealing to keep the kids away from public scrutiny, one user requested, “Dear @Facebook - please consider removing the photos of Wayne Couzens’s young children from public view. Their lives have already been destroyed if their dad is guilty of this heinous crime, but it‘s also not their fault if they are the children of a sadistic evil murderer.”

Another said, “The pictures of Wayne Couzens with his family give me the chills. he’s married, a father has 2 young children. he’s a police officer, someone we should trust. his neighbors say he’s a lovely, family man. this shows that while it’s not be all men, we don’t know which men it is,” one said. Another social media user added, “I have no bloody sympathy for that disgraceful UK Police Officer Wayne Couzens and his wife (Elena) who is also involved in this incident that's why she's been arrested both of them are murderers. But I have sympathy for their little children.”

One even went on to say, “#ElenaCouzens is just as much to blame as #waynecouzens, I understand the children need somebody but there’s more family. She should be custody, there’s no way she didn’t know what was going on.”

No link or previous connection has been established between Sarah Everard and Wayne Couzens. According to the Times, police sources believe she was lured off the street, and the investigation is being treated like a “stranger attack”.

After being taken into custody, Wayne was found unconscious in a cell at Wandsworth police station on Thursday, his third day in custody. Cops confirmed he suffered the injury while alone in a cell, where he was being monitored by CCTV. According to forensic investigators, he received “immediate first aid”. Couzens was later discharged from the hospital and returned to a cell.
