Virginia Beach Shootings: 2 dead, 8 injured in separate shooting incidents in 'very chaotic night'; 3 arrested

Police said that three men have been arrested in connection with the shootings, and two of the victims have been identified

In a second update, related to the shootings, the police shared that three individuals have been charged and are in custody. The police said in their press release that it was three separate shooting incidents that rocked the Virginia Beach Resort Area. The identities of the deceased have been confirmed as 29-year-old Deshayla E Harris of Norfolk, who was a bystander in the second shooting incident and a 25-year-old male Donovon W Lynch of Virginia Beach died in the third event, an officer-involved shooting.

The release also stated the names of the individuals charged in the incident. 22-year-old Ahmon Jahree Adams of Chesapeake, VA, Nyquez Tyyon Baker, 18, of Virginia Beach and Devon Maurice Dorsey Jr, 20, of Virginia Beach have been arrested and charged with seven counts of felonious assault, use of firearm in commission of felony and reckless handling of a firearm. Adams, Baker and Dorsey were reportedly involved in the first incident located in the 2000 block of Atlantic Avenue and are being held at the Virginia Beach City Jail.



 


In the first update since the shooting, the police one Virginia Beach Police Officer was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. One adult female victim succumbed to her injuries from a gunshot wound on the scene and said that the officer who shot a suspect in the second incident is from the Special Operations Division. The officer was not named but has been with the department for 5 years. The individual has been placed on administrative assignment, as is department policy until an investigation into the incident is complete. They added, "This scene is still very active with several crime scene areas blocking roadways. Therefore, police are asking for you to please avoid this area while detectives are investigating this case."

VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA: Two people were fatally shot and several others injured in two separate shooting incidents late Friday night, March 26, on Virginia Beach. Details of the incident are scarce, but we do know that it occurred at around 11:20 pm. Dispatchers responded to the calls from 1900 block of Pacific Avenue in the area of 17th Street and 22nd Street. The location is near the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, a boardwalk lined with budget hotels and fast-food restaurants.

According to eyewitnesses, two individuals with guns got into a dispute and began firing wildly. We know now that eight victims were transported to the hospital,  with injuries varying from serious to life-threatening. One woman also succumbed to her injuries at the scene. We do know that there were three separate incidents, one at 20th and Atlantic Avenue and the other at 20th St and Pacific. As officers were responding, "additional shots were fired in the area of 20th and Pacific", which led to a confrontation between a uniformed officer and an unknown individual. The police said that the person was killed in the confrontation, but did not provide more details.

Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate confirmed that an officer was also injured in the incident. "We had an officer that was struck by a car. He has been transported to the hospital." It is unclear if that occurred at the scene of the shooting or is unrelated. Right now, there is a lot of confusion at the scene since the police are dealing with multiple crime scenes and events. “It was a very chaotic incident,” Neudigate said at a news conference on March 27. “A very chaotic night in the beach. Many different crime scenes.” 

A reporter from WAVY News caught the statement on camera, sharing it on Twitter. According to him, "2 are dead after multiple shootings at the @CityofVaBeach
Oceanfront. 1 was shot by a @VBPD officer, another 8 shot in an incident that started outside at 20th and Atlantic. Officer was stuck by car at 20th and Pacific, he’s expected to be okay"



 

13 News Now reporter Ali Weatherton reported that "several people are in custody and being questioned". Police are yet to name the victims and that of those in custody. As news of the violence made its way to social media, many people have once again called for greater gun control. "This is unbearable. It happened again. Another mass shooting. Multiple people shot and wounded, some are suffering life-threatening injuries, in a mass shooting in Virginia Beach. No deaths confirmed yet. This country’s gone insane. This shit has to stop" one person tweeted.



 

Another said, "Shooting in Virginia Beach right now. WTF is wrong with america ?" One person tweeted, "Virginia Beach. God, not another one. Jesus, not another one. This country is insane."
