'Vikings' Season 6 Part 2: What happens to Ivar? Fans slam 'bullsh*t' ending, celebrate he 'finally got laid'
One would say Ivar the boneless was a whole bunch of talk and no action. You could also call him a trailer for betraying brother Bjorn Ironside to fight alongside Prince Oleg of Constantinopole and ultimately lead to the death of Bjorn in the battle that culminates in the very first episode of the brand new final half of Season 6.
After six years, and proving himself in whatever way he could, time and again, Ivar's arc sees a speck of redemption with the way he tackles the young Price Igor and helps him escape the shackles of his tyrannical uncle Oleg. So it's understandable why some fans would find it frustrating how Ivar's story comes to an end in Episodes 19 and 20 of the final season.
When the second part of Season 6 picks up, Ivar is celebrating how he finally managed to near-fatally wound the great Bjorn in the battle between Oleg and the Vikings. They receive confirmation of Bjorn's death in the evening, but there's a grave surprise awaiting them when they attack the gates of the Kattegat the next morning.
Bjorn, near-dead, cold, and pale marches on his horse and leads his troupes into battle before succumbing to his injuries from the night before, and a few more arrows shot by one of Oleg's officers. The rest of the Vikings wage war, but Oleg's troupes, superstitious to see a dead man charging, flee the battle thus leading to their defeat.
Jilted and raging, Oleg decides to not only punish his officers by killing them, but also tries to lure Hvitserk with a drug dependency and causes a breach between him and Ivar. Being the sensible one, Ivar drives some sense into his brother's head, and fortunately, both Oleg's brother Prince Dir, and Oleg's wife Katya turns to his side to organize a mutiny.
Ivar then plans an escape under disguise and when the entire kingdom is busy in the Bishop's reenactment of the crucifixion of Christ, they sneak their way out along with Igor whom Ivar refuses to leave behind. The story of Igor and Ivar thereon is quite touching, and the little boy, manipulated and terrorized by his uncle, starts seeing the Viking as the brother figure he never had.
So much so, that Igor breaks down when Ivar leaves his brother's territory and tells the older man "You have been everything to me Ivar the boneless. I love you and I always will." One could argue this was Ivar's redemption for killing his own brother in battle, his guidance towards Hvitserk coming quite close too.
But the fight against the Christians is far from over as the Wessex army attacks Ivar and Hvitserk, who by this time have found a common ally in Harald Finehair. The battle between the Vikings and the Wessex Christians is blood and or galore with several people dying even though the Wessexes were defeated at the first g and Ivar had offered them a shot at surrendering too. Refusing to budge, they continue fighting the Vikings and mid-battle, an epiphany dawns on Ivar about his prophecy where he and Hvitserk are bound to kill each other.
He asks his brother to kill him, but Hvitserk doesn't have the grit in him to submit to Ivar's final wish. So, aging and screaming his prowess, Ivar dies on the battlefield after being stabbed by a tiny knife by one of the most easily intimidated Wessex officers. Not a fitting ending to a man of such sheer bravery and cunning right? Most fans agree.
Taking it to Twitter, one wrote "The end of #Vikings is bullsh*t. I needed to say this for Ivar's death. Is the happy end that people wanted to see." Another shared "Just finished #Vikings and after the last episode, I now need a moment of silence or a strong cocktail. Possibly a corner to cry in. #allthefeels #whatthef**k ....I guess at least... #ivartheboneless got laid!"
A fan went on to slam the whole reason when it came to the fate it delivered to Ivar: "Season 1-4 is genius, exciting!Season 5&6 is terrible, annoying!! Another example of a great show ruined in final seasons due to greediness of the producer, basically series died at the same time as Ragnar I H.A.T.E you."

While a fan noted "I will never be the same" following Ivar's death, another chimed in saying: "Same, it broke me into pieces and I hate myself at that point that I already rewatched that part 4 times."
Summing it up as to why all of this was so unfair, a fan wrote: "He is only trusted #Ragnar words He is only one avenge his mother death He is only one wons many battles He is True hero of #Vikings And is name #IvarTheBoneless And he died." Here's hoping the Netflix spinoff in the works does Ivar some justice!
