In January 2021, Twitter permanently banned Donald Trump’s account for allegedly violating its rules against glorifying violence via two tweets. The first tweet was, “The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape, or form!!!” Followed by, “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.”

Following this, the company took a call on Trump's ban from Twitter and stated in a blog, "Due to the ongoing tensions in the United States, and an uptick in the global conversation in regards to the people who violently stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, these two Tweets must be read in the context of broader events in the country and the ways in which the President’s statements can be mobilized by different audiences, including to incite violence, as well as in the context of the pattern of behavior from this account in recent weeks. After assessing the language in these Tweets against our Glorification of Violence policy, we have determined that these Tweets are in violation of the Glorification of Violence Policy and the user @realDonaldTrump should be immediately and permanently suspended from the service." However, Matt Taibbi's Twitter Files Part 3 delves into the specifics of what led to the removal of Trump's social media account.

Trump reinstated

In November 2022, Elon Musk posted a poll asking if Trump should be allowed back on the platform. With 51.8 percent voting in favor of reinstating Trump on Twitter, Musk wrote, “The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” quoting a Latin phrase that translates to “the voice of people, the voice of God.”

Twitter File Part 3

However, the third part of Twitter Files by author Matt Taibbi digs into the details of what went behind the removal. He wrote on Friday, December 9, "The world knows much of the story of what happened between riots at the Capitol on January 6th and the removal of President Donald Trump from Twitter on January 8th." And added, "We’ll show you what hasn’t been revealed: the erosion of standards within the company in months before J6, decisions by high-ranking executives to violate their own policies, and more, against the backdrop of ongoing, documented interaction with federal agencies."

"Whatever your opinion on the decision to remove Trump that day, the internal communications at Twitter between January 6th-January 8th have clear historical import. Even Twitter’s employees understood in the moment it was a landmark moment in the annals of speech," he further stated. "As soon as they finished banning Trump, Twitter execs started processing new power. They prepared to ban future presidents and White Houses – perhaps even Joe Biden. The 'new administration,' says one exec, 'will not be suspended by Twitter unless absolutely necessary,'" wrote Taibbi.

One unnamed executive alleged the "context surrounding" the actions of Trump and his supporters "over the course of the election and frankly last 4+ years" contributed to the ban.
"In the end, they looked at a broad picture. But that approach can cut both ways," Taibbi wrote. "The bulk of the internal debate leading to Trump’s ban took place in those three January days. However, the intellectual framework was laid in the months preceding the Capitol riots."

Following this, one of the netizens said, "Unbelievable!!! dirt everywhere." Another wrote, "As of now, this Twitter Files about the removal of Donald Trump is something we already knew. We knew there wasn't a particular tweet from Donald Trump stating a call for violence. We knew it was about his coded language and his entire 4-year presidency that led to Jan6." One more said, "The real problem with the removal of Donald Trump from Twitter was that it took WAY TOO LONG to happen." While one of many individuals commented by saying, "This newest thread by Matt Taibbi [The Twitter Files: The removal of Donald Trump] Is embarrassing. For Matt Taibbi. (and Elon Musk, of course, who's "sponsoring" it) I'm not even going to include the link to it. It's that retarded."
