NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Tumblr is back in the news after it lifted its four-year ban on nudity. The move has come hours after reports surfaced that Twitter owner Elon Musk will charge for video content showing adult material. The microblogging site banned adult content after its app was taken down by Apple’s App store over a child pornography event in 2018.

That was the moment for Tumblr that triggered its downfall and users started fleeing the platform. It dropped 40% from October 2018 to October 2021, as reported by The Atlantic. His trickle-down of Tumblr forced then-owner Verizon to sell it to Automattic, which is the parent company of WordPress for a mere $3 million. Interestingly, when everyone was abandoning Tumblr, a few celebrities expressed their love for the platform. Taylor Swift told Billboard that she still enjoys Tumblr the most when it comes to social media sites, "(It) feels like a neighborhood rather than an entire continent."

A report by Quartz claimed 61% of new users of Tumblr were under the age of 24. And the platform is further strengthened by Vogue reporting that both millennials' and Gen Z’s interest has grown. The blog published by the magazine read, "Gaining significant traction thanks to content creators and fashionistas reviving their adolescent aesthetics. Now the Tumblr girl style is being revisited by its millennial originators, but also Gen Z, which has discovered and altered the trend."

After the news of nudity and other kinds of adult material will be welcomed on Tumblr, lots of netizens are sharing their opinion on various platforms, especially comparison with Twitter is inevitable.

One user shared a meme, where a gun is held on the Twitter owner, Elon Musk. One user tweeted, “You always vould have as of literally a few weeks ago. Hell, months ago if you look at some accounts who have been doing it. You just had to appeal to the content blocking. They just want to be on the apple store, they dont actually give a damn about banning boobs genuinely.”

Some users were not sure about how the new guidelines from Tumblr will unfold, “I don't buy it. Sure they say they'll allow nakey but as soon as you start to make it even a little kinky or fetish based? BOOM!!! post hidden.” Another user commented, “So, essentially, they're back to most if not all softcore / PB style content? That's fine. Dare I say, it's what pre-Oath Tumblr did best. Plenty of other sites for the explicit stuff.” One more user shared a clip and wrote, “People leaving Twitter & returning to Tumblr, now that nudity is allowed again.”
