Was Heather Mewshaw canceled? Ex-White House ASL interpreter says Biden admin 'humiliated' her over Trump support

The 41-year-old married mother-of-four from Glen Burnie, Maryland, also said she’s been 'harassed and intimidated' online for providing doing sign language translation for conservative groups

Heather Mewshaw was outed as a supporter of former President Donald Trump. But ever since her loyalties became public knowledge, it seems to her as though she has more enemies than friends. On Sunday, February 7, the White House sign-language interpreter said that she hasn’t been offered a return engagement since it was revealed that she supports Trump, and blasted critics who attacked her credibility and professionalism.

Last year, Mewshaw began working as an independent contractor for the White House. She recently said that the Biden administration did not contact her following a Time magazine report that revealed she translated speeches for conservative social media groups. "The goal of my activity — at the White House or with Hands of Liberty — is that it’s all about access," Mewshaw told The Post. "The thing is, I was canceled and humiliated publicly and it was unjust and unfair."

The 41-year-old married mother-of-four from Glen Burnie, Maryland, also said she’s been "harassed" and "intimidated" online for providing American Sign Language translation for the Hands of Liberty Facebook group and its defunct predecessor, Right Side ASL.

These videos include one featuring former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani titled 'What Really Happened On January 6th?' the fateful day of the US Capitol riots by Trump supporters — and another, which is since removed, featuring the controversial Dr Stella Immanuel, who has promoted treating Covid-19 with hydroxychloroquine, which the FDA has banned for that purpose.

As an interpreter, Mewshaw added that she doesn’t necessarily agree with everything she translates, but does the volunteer work in response to requests from people who want to see speeches by Republican politicians and other conservative figures translated into ASL.

On the other hand, Mewshaw adds that her critics, "don’t want this content to be interpreted because they don’t believe in it. Deaf people just want a chance to decide for themself what information is out there," she said. 

She acknowledged being a Trump supporter and that said she paid "about $20" to buy a red "Keep America Great" hat for a video titled "Thank You President Trump from the Right Side ASL Team!" that was posted the same day President Biden was inaugurated last month.  

Trump supporters on Twitter are furious at the discrimination Mewshaw has faced. "I cannot believe that this is happening !! It is a shame that they are so many good people out there that are good working and reputable people being rediculed!" one user said.

"The Biden admin fired their sign language interpreter for being a trump supporter and then questioned her credibility because of it. So dumb that it’s funny," another tweeted. "Is this what @JoeBiden means about “unity”?" one simply questioned. 

Others couldn't understand why the drama was taking place. "Wouldn’t say canceled! In fact not cancelled. Every president can choose their own communication tram. Typical Trump supporter. Go to Florida. Ex-White House interpreter says she was ‘canceled’ for supporting Trump," one tweeted.

"A sign-language interpreter who was dumped by the Biden White House after being outed as a Trump supporter says she has been 'canceled and humiliated' for her political views. Where was she when Trump was humiliating everyone?" another added.
