HILLSBOROUGH, FLORIDA: A man accused of kidnapping and raping his ex-wife while holding her hostage for two days during a campaign of abuse has sensationally cross-examined her at his own trial on Wednesday, August 24. During the break time, Trevor Steven Summers, 45, pleaded to Judge Christopher C Sabella to represent himself during the remainder of the trial in Hillsborough County, Florida.
Summers, who represented himself in Hillsborough County, Florida, posed a series of questions to his former wife Alisa Mathewson, who accuses him of violence and sexual assault. Summers, with whom she has five children, the ex-wife claims, attacked her in her sleep and raped her after breaking into her home on March 11, 2017. Summers questioned Mathewson if he threatened her to have “sex” with him. “You broke into my home in the middle of the night when I was sleeping, attacked me, and tied me up!” she said. “I take that as yes, you threatened me to have sex with you! Yes!" Law & Crime reported.

Mathewson claimed that Summers forced her to have "sex" with him. But also accepted that he did not push her down during the assault. “Prior to having sex, you did push me, you did hold me down, you did tie me up, you did attack me, and you did break into my home when I was sleeping! You raped me!” Summers is charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder for allegedly smothering his ex-wife with a pillow until she passed out and strangling her with a rope.
Mathewson claimed that Summers snuck into her home and ambushed her in her sleep on March 11, 2017, between Tuesday and Wednesday morning. The former couple, who had five children together, were divorced but estranged, and lived in separate homes. Her two younger children were in bed with her, and their 14-year-old daughter was sitting on the couch.
Summers exposed her to two days of violent behavior, including sexual assault and physical abuse, from the moment he dragged her off the bed, she testified. This included driving her through several counties, according to reports. Despite being restrained, she managed to flee when he parked at a Walgreens and went inside, but he returned, forced her back into the vehicle, and fled, according to Mathewson.
Randall Crosby, a Walgreens employee, testified that he witnessed this and called 911. Summers sliced one of Mathewson's wrists in retaliation for the Walgreens escape, according to Mathewson.
Summers allegedly took the same razor blade he used to slice her wrist and began slitting his own throat when he saw the unmarked police car, saying, "This is what love is. I'm laying down my life for you. You do not deserve it.''
Summers hid from law enforcement in a field in Manatee County, Florida, until March 12, according to Assistant State Attorney Jennifer Johnson, but they had to leave the next day when they ran out of food and water.
On Wednesday, August 24, when Summers plead to the Judge to represent himself, the judge warned that he did not consider this a "wise" decision, but ultimately conceded to the request.
Prior to the trial, Mathewson expressed concern about having to face Summers in cross-examination. “As a victim, it’s a little scary, it’s a little intimidating,” she told Fox 13 News earlier this year. “I have a lifetime protective order against him, and he’s going to be right in front of me, questioning me about the crimes he committed against me.”
Summers' 14-year-old daughter, Arden Summers, who was present during the incident, is expected to testify against him. He allegedly duped her into leaving a window open at her mother's house. “This was a man I trusted," she said. “This is a man who I thought could do no wrong and just to know that he used me to do what he wanted to do hurts more than anything.”
