'The Sympathizer' Episode 4 Ending Explained: Captain's adventures on film set turn ugly
Contains spoilers for 'The Sympathizer'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: HBO's 'The Sympathizer' takes a bizarre twist in Episode 4 as Captain (Hoa Xuande) suddenly deviates from his espionage duties and lands on a film set.
He is now the cultural consultant to film director, Niko Damianos (Robert Downey Jr.), who is apparently missing “the perspective of the Vietnamese people" and Captain can help him to get things right.
The recent episode encapsulates Captain's adventures on a Hollywood film where his only job is to make the film look more authentic.
Why is Captain fired by Niko Damianos in 'The Sympathizer' Episode 4?
Niko adds a sexual assault scene between actor Ryan Glenn and General's daughter Lana (Vy Le). He gives Lana's character the name of Captain's dead mother citing that he’s “honoring her” as all the Vietnamese were metaphorically abused.
In an attempt to convince Captain, Niko adds, “She’s a real Vietnamese who will now get the privilege of representing the tens of millions of Vietnamese who never got the chance to speak up for themselves."
However, Captain continues to be upset and Niko eventually fires him.
Later, when Captain learns that Shamus might continue his method acting and actually assault Lana, he gives a premature cue and signals Johnson to attack Shamus. Thus, Captain eventually ruins the scene, leaving everyone including Lana furious.
Captain gets caught in bombing in 'The Sympathizer' Episode 4 climax
The final scene takes us back to North Vietnam prison where Captain is held captive and is being investigated. Captain narrates his experiences on the film set.
The final scene moves back to the film set, where Captain finds himself in the middle of another scene. He barely makes it out alive amid the bombing which appears to be the climax scene of Niko's film.
'The Sympathizer' is available to stream on HBO Max.
