Who is the Polka-Dot Man?

Polka-Dot Man is undoubtedly one of the weirdest and crazy supervillains in the entire DC Universe. The character made its first appearance in ‘Detective Comics #300’ in 1962 and was born with the name of Abner Krill. But how did he become the Polka-Dot Man? The appearance of Batman in Gotham City inspired a lot of small criminals to commit harmless crimes while wearing costumes. Among these was a local crook named Krill, who wanted to make a name for himself by pitting himself against the caped crusader and proving himself to be the superior being.

As far as the costume is concerned, Krill wore a costume covered in spots and came in different colors. But if you think that it was just a regular costume, then you are wrong. It was much more than that.

Abner Krill aka Polka-Dot Man (DC Comics)

He started with a series of robberies and targeted businesses connected to dots and spots, like a nightclub called The Ink Spot and the Domino Gaming Company. Krill, who was originally known as Mister Polka-Dot succeeded in getting The Dark Knight’s attention and came into conflict with him and his partner Robin. He managed to capture Robin, but Batman defeated him because Robin warned him of a trap that the supervillain had set for him by using the dot-based language.

Years after getting beaten up by Batman, Krill tried to make a comeback to the world of crime and make a name for himself once again. But this time, he did not have the resources to afford a costume, so he just used a baseball bat to rob stores. He was badly injured during a scuffle with a policeman and became an alcoholic at the end.

What are his abilities?

Like we mentioned above that his costume was much more than just a regular costume worn by a comic-book character. The costume is the most integral part of Polka-Dot Man. Just like Batman, he doesn’t have any superhuman abilities but instead arms himself with several useful gadgets that prove to be really handy while committing robberies.

The Polka-Dot Man stored all the gadgets on his costume as a series of adhesive dots and whenever he needs a gadget, all he needs to do is simply peel a particular dot off of his suit and it will automatically expand to full size. He also has the power to manipulate the tools through the belt of his costume.

The tools used by the supervillain included: a Flying Buzzsaw Dot (Red Polka Dot), a Sun Dot (Gold Polka Dot), a Bubble Dot (White Polka Dot), Fist Dots (Red, Yellow, and Orange Polka Dots), Hole Dot (Black Polka Dot) and a Flying Saucer Dot (Yellow Polka Dot). The most notable tool used by the character is the Flying Saucer Dot, which expanded and turned into a flying saucer. He used the flying saucer as a getaway vehicle.

Who is playing the Polka-Dot Man in ‘The Suicide Squad’?

The character of Polka-Dot Man is played by the supremely talented actor David Dastmalchian. The version shown in the movie is a bit different as compared to the comics. In the movie, he is infected with an inter-dimensional virus by his mother and wears a special suit to focus on his powers.

This is not the first time Dastmalchian is featuring in a DC movie. He made a cameo appearance in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’ and was a member of the group assembled by Joker (Heath Ledger) to turn Gotham City into a crime capital.

He also played the supervillain Abra Kadabra on the TV show ‘The Flash’. The actor has also been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and appeared in ‘Ant-Man’ and its sequel ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’. We hope to see a crazy version of the Polka-Dot Man in the movie.

‘The Suicide Squad’ will release simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6.
