The Regime Episode 5 Preview: Elena Vernham and Herbert Zubak take their relationship to next level
Contains spoilers for 'The Regime' episode 4
CENTRAL EUROPE, EUROPE: Viewers are transported to a fictional nation in Europe in HBO's political satire series 'The Regime,' where the head of state is employing every tactic to maintain her grip on power.
The show follows the story of Chancellor Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet), who is in charge of an unidentified nation.
As the head of state, Elena embodies every negative quality typically associated with a dictator. Not only does she lack confidence in others, but she also harbors extreme paranoia about her health.
She is determined to hold onto power at all costs, asserting her authority to dismiss even those who were once close to her from their positions.
The same fate was bestowed upon Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), who was once her most trusted advisor. However, Elena has him imprisoned as she senses her authority slipping away over him.
It is important to remember that Herbert's downfall was not solely attributed to Elena, as the dishonored soldier's violent actions also earned him a spot in jail.
What happened in 'The Regime' Episode 4?
The episode was full of twists and turns. Elena, who was convinced she could manage without Herbert's assistance, finds herself grappling with a newfound fear of hot flushes.
Her Chinese affiliations were also proving to be a liability, as widespread protests erupted against the sale of Chinese sugar.
In the most recent episodes, she makes even more rash decisions, such as accusing the President of Sugar Beet of conspiring with Americans after failing to resolve the protest scenario.
However, she did experience a sense of relief when, at the end of the episode, she engaged in a passionate kiss with Herbert, laying the groundwork for more impending drama.
What will happen in 'The Regime' Episode 5?
The forthcoming episode will provide insight into Elena and Herbert's new connection, following their passionate kiss in front of ministers and her husband, Nicholas Vernham (Guillaume Gallienne).
The new relationship will also weaken Nicholas' grasp of Elena. It is possible that he may conspire once more with the hidden group of ministers to remove Herbert's power, or he may opt to separate from the Chancellor.
It would also be intriguing to see if Agnes (Andrea Riseborough) eventually succumbs and agrees to provide the Americans with crucial information about Elena.
When will 'The Regime' Episode 5 air?
The fourth episode of the six-part series will air on Sunday, March 31.
Gary Shteyngart and Jen Spyra will write and direct the episode, titled 'All Ye Faithful'.
'The Regime' Episode 4 is now streaming on Max.
