HBO’s latest offering ‘The Nevers’ is filled with amazing camerawork and stunning visuals. The pilot episode displayed the retro feel of the historical movies. However, one of the challenges that the series faces is that there are a lot of characters and as the series moves forward, we are going to see more of them over the next few weeks. The pace of the show is something that might ruin the show for the viewers. Nevertheless, the show is filled with some really good storylines and amazing characters that make it worth a watch.

The pilot episode spent most of its time introducing all the unique and diverse ensembles of characters. One of the scenes (The Opera sequence) was beautifully directed to bring all the characters in one frame and give viewers a chance to underline their similarities and differences. The episode also showed us how these people got their superpowers and how a supernatural phenomenon changes their lives forever.

The Nevers’ Episode 1 Recap

A mysterious supernatural event takes place in London on August 3, 1896, in which many of its residents, predominantly women, attain superpowers. Three years have passed by and the entire country, along with the British Empire, is still trying to find out what happened on that fateful day. The people with these abnormal abilities are referred to as the “Touched.” All their strange and occasionally indescribable powers are imperiously called “tricks” or “turns”.

The members of the “Touched” have found safe haven in an orphanage run by Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), an experienced fighter, who has the power to see the “ripples” of the future. The orphanage is being run with the help of an investor named Penance Adair (Ann Skelly) and financial assistance from wealthy philanthropist Lavinia Bidlow (Olivia Williams).

Both Amalia and Penance are also members of the “Touched” and have their respective powers.

The duo tries to save a girl named Myrtle Haplisch (Viola Prettejohn) and encounters a masked group that is doing everything and anything to abduct the good people from the “Touched.” Later in the episode, we see all the characters attending the opera at Lavinia’s invitation. In the middle of the performance, the serial killer Maladie (Amy Manson) shows up along with the evil forces. Shockingly, all the people with Maladie are revealed to be the members of the “Touched.” However, they have joined the enemy group. They kill several people and escape with Mary (Eleanor Tomlinson), a singer who tries to calm the killers with her musical abilities. Amalia makes a desperate attempt to stop them but ultimately fails.

Spoilers for ‘The Nevers’ Episode 2

Amalia and Penance are the only individuals to know what happened on that day and how they received their superpowers. We might get to see some flashback scenes in Episode 2, titled ‘Exposure’, which give us an idea of what exactly happened immediately after the mysterious event.

On the other hand, the city is in shock after what happened at the Opera. Maladie is wreaking havoc in the city and continues to kill people at will. She has captured Mary and taken her to an unknown location. Frank Mundi (Ben Chaplin) will take a personal stake in the matter and will start investigating the disappearance of Mary.

On the other hand, Amalia will launch her own investigation and try to find Mary. It will be interesting to see how Amalia takes the matter into her hands and what kind of methods she will use in finding Mary. We can also see a face-off between Amalia and Maladie, which will undoubtedly be epic.

Will Amalia & co be able to find Mary? Or will Maladie kill her too like everyone else? We would have to wait for the second episode to get answers.

‘The Nevers’ returns to HBO for a new episode every Sunday at 9 pm ET.
