'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' Season 3 Episode 4: Married, divorced, married again; Joel and Midge's relationship is full of complexities
Is there no end to Joel and Midge's relationship in 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel'? Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger with a passionate kiss that the estranged couple shared and after several loving conversations, the two slept together again in Episode 4.
When Susie goes to New York to run an errand, Midge finds herself alone and invites Joel to visit her. He comes to Las Vegas and is welcomed with the best services.
At the stand-up night, Midge jokes, "My ex-husband is here, right here at the table. Now I promised I wouldn't talk about him," she says and then cracks jokes one after another. He loves her performance and chuckles at her witticisms.
After the performance, she makes Joel meet Shy Baldwin. The two spend a good time and talk all night. The next morning, Joel and Midge wake up in bed together. The two try to recollect the events of the night and realize they got married in Vegas.
Both have a different reaction to the scenario. While Midge laughs about it, Joel is worried about the new girl in his life. In a state of panic, he says, "I've got a —" and adds, "I'm kinda seeing someone. It's very new."
Moreover, he wonders if Midge is having an affair with Shy Baldwin. "Whose shorts are these," he quizzes her. "It's Susie's." In a huff, Joel leaves and tells her he will get on the case with his lawyer.
Marriage, divorce, marriage again, what are these bizarre set of events in this relationship trajectory? It is quite suspenseful to watch what will happen in the future, whether or not they will get their marriage annulled.
Several fans wish for the pair to stay together. "I love Joel and think he and Midge have great chemistry! I think he was a jerk in the first episode of the first season, but ever since then, he's pretty much been devoted to Midge trying to undo what he realized to be a terrible mistake," one viewer posted.
The viewer added, "He was super supportive of Midge's career in the second season, and also grew a pair professionally."
Another wrote, "I don't get why Joel left Midge in the first place. And I never feel that resolved during the season. When they hook up later in the season, he acknowledges that she's the full package, pretty, smart, funny. So why did he leave?"
Joel already has a new girl on the block and Midge needs to make up her mind and draw a line with her ex-husband. The showrunners need to set a clear path for the pair, don't they?
