'The Magicians' Season 5: Release date, plot, cast, trailer and everything you need to know about the Syfy show
The world has been saved, once again, but since when has it ever stayed that way? ‘The Magicians’ Season 5 is set to return with yet another apocalypse, as the team mourns the passing of Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph).
Quentin sacrificed his life to bring magic back, but unsurprisingly, the results weren’t perfect. It’s not the return of magic - it’s magic in excess. In the meanwhile, 300 years have passed in Fillory, and a Dark King has taken the throne - who is he, and what has he done to Fillory in the centuries since Elliot (Hale Appleman) and Margot (Summer Bishil) were in power?
Based on the book series by Lev Grossman, ‘The Magicians’ is returning for its fifth season on Syfy. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming season.
Release Date
Season 5 will debut on January 15, 2020 at 10/9c on Syfy.
Plot
Last season saw the Monster possessing Elliot, and his sister destroyed once and for all. The Library's draconic hold on magic was released, as Quentin's sacrifice returned magic to the world. However, there is now too much magic for the world to contain, leading to overpowered spells and malfunctioning enchantments. In the meanwhile, a Dark King has taken hold of Fillory in the 300 years that have suddenly passed since the last time the Brakebills graduates visited the fantasy world. Apocalyptic doom seems to be rearing its ugly head once again, and Julia (Stella Maeve) intends to save it, and this time, make it stick.
Cast
Nearly all of the series regulars will be returning to their roles, with one notable exception - Jason Ralph who played Quentin Coldwater on the show. This dashes hopes of a magical return for the character, or a version of him from an alternate timeline like with Penny-23.
The main cast will star Olivia Dudley, Stella Maeve, Hale Appleman, Summer Bishil, Arjun Gupta and Jade Tailor.
Maeve’s other television credits include her work on NBC’s “Chicago PD” as Nadia Decotis, lead roles in the CW pilot “Norfolk” and on the CBS series “Golden Boy,” also starring Theo James, and guest-starring roles on “Law & Order: SVU,” “Rizzoli & Isles,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “House M.D.,” “Bones,” “Gossip Girl” and “CSI.” She plays Julia Wicker on the show. Julia was on a revenge-seeking mission to heal her deep wounds.
Dudley began her career in 2012 with a breakout leading role in Oren Peli's The Chernobyl Diaries. She then starred in Paramount’s “Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension” and in the Lakeshore/Lionsgate horror flick “Vatican Tapes” opposite Michael Pena, playing a possession victim in a performance praised by The New York Times. Dudley’s other notable television credits include “Arrested Development,” “The Mindy Project,” “Don't Trust the B in Apt. 23,” “CSI: Miami” and “NCIS.” In 'The Magicians' she plays Alice Quinn, a phenomenally talented magician who is painfully shy.
Appleman made his film debut in Chad Lowe’s feature “Beautiful Ohio” opposite, Willian Hurt. Additionally, Appleman played ‘Tobey’ in the 2007 film “Teeth.” On 'The Magicians' he plays Eliot Waugh. A natural leader no matter where he goes, Eliot is determined to take his responsibility as High King of Fillory seriously as he works to bring hope back to the land he now presides over.
Showrunners
This season, executive producers and showrunners Sera Gamble and John McNamara will be welcoming a new showrunner to the team - Henry Alonso Myers, who has worked as an executive producer for the series before. Myers has also been a producer on shows like 'Chuck,' 'Ugly Betty,' 'The Carrie Diaries' and 'Covert Affairs.'
Trailers
The first look at the new season of 'The Magicians' was a sneak peek released during the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con on July 20th, showing a scene in which Julia is very pointedly not given a quest by a literal sexist pig from Fillory.
On November 8, a teaser released by Syfy showed just how everyone was dealing with the passing of Quentin Coldwater.
On December 2nd, Syfy released a full trailer for Season 5, showing the aftereffects of a world given too much magic, and including a release date for the season.
Pictures
Syfy has released a full poster for Season 5, including all of the main cast - notably missing Quentin.
