'The Bold Type' Season 4 Finale: Will Jane Sloan quit Scarlet with so much at stake, again?

Jane is headed towards a clash with the editor-in-chief of Scarlet Magazine over a story that she wants to take forward

Freeform's very popular show 'The Bold Type', now in its (highly criticized) fourth season, is drawing to an end. The three female protagonists Jane Sloan, Kat Edison and Sutton Brady find themselves at crossroads as life (more like the show's writers) has brought them unwelcome circumstances. How will they navigate from here? Jane (Katie Stevens), Scarlet Magazine's very talented writer, now heads her own vertical. And barring the romance with her junior Scott Coleman (Mat Vairo), she seems to have everything under control — just as her type-A personality likes it. Everything except a new story.

In a promo released by the show ahead of the episode's airing, Jane is shown headed towards a clash with the editor-in-chief of Scarlet Magazine, Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin). She is seen saying that a very important story is stifled by Jacqueline for personal reasons — whether these reasons are revealed is yet to be seen. According to the official synopsis of the episode, "Jane finds a big story, but it could have serious ramifications for Jacqueline". In the past, no ramification has scared Jane off into letting a story go. But in the past, Jacqueline wasn't directly affected at all (if you don't count the rape survivors story).

Will she then go on with this story? In the same promo, in another scene, her close aide and colleague Alex Crawford (Matt Ward) tells her, "If this is a story that matters, then you gotta fight for it". How will she fight for it? After all, it is Jacqueline who sanctions all stories before they go to print. Is it possible then that Jacqueline will refuse to do it? Perhaps that will lead to Jane quitting Scarlet altogether. It's not like it hadn't happened before. Jane has already left Scarlet once and returned soon. But at that time, she did not have her own vertical. Now with so much at stake, any chance that she will leave?

Apart from Jane, it's not like her two best friends are having the time of their lives — especially Sutton (Meghann Fahy) who, following a very emotional disagreement with husband Richard Hunter (Sam Page), finds herself abandoned and forlorn. According to the episode's official synopsis, "Sutton visits her hometown but falls into a familiar pattern while there; Kat is reluctant to share her new romance with Jane and Sutton."

With so much happening at once, we hope that the show remains true to its characters, but more importantly, to the reputation it has earned itself since 2017. It'll be a shame for it to bid farewell on any other note. 'The Bold Type' will air its final episode of Season 4 'Not Far From The Tree' on Thursday, June 16, 2020, at 10 pm ET /PT on Freeform.
