AOC trolls Ted Cruz as duo engage in Twitter battle over border crisis: 'Maybe Mexico shouldn’t let you in'

It is well known that Republicans and Democrats don't get along well. We've seen countless examples of Senators and Representatives engaging in a battle over social media, on TV, and in interviews. The latest blow-up is between Senator Ted Cruz and Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (AOC). The Twitter war has caught the eye of others on the platform, who have taken the opportunity to troll both the lawmakers.

AOC made a series of tweets earlier on April 1, attacking her own party and the group of Republicans who made a trip to the border last week. This led Cruz to respond, but it seemed like AOC was more than up for the challenge. She responded with two tweets, which seem to have silenced Cruz. The Senator is yet to respond to AOC's final tweet, where she slammed his trip to Cancun earlier this year.

Here's how it went down. First, AOC tweeted, "A politician’s strength isn’t based on a trip. It’s based on their policy and voting RECORD. And the fact is a LOT of Ted Cruz types who are now going down to meet refugee children in boats outfitted w/ machine guns are the ones who helped create this problem in the first place." She then followed it up with another tweet saying, "For all those who are brand new to this & only care about cages on a partisan basis, catch up: we‘ve been fighting our own party on immigration for a long time. This is the result of Congress endlessly dumping money into CBP/ICE cages vs humane policy".

Cruz responded to that second tweet by saying, "@AOC explains the real Dem position: abolish ICE. Full open borders. Which would make the #BidenBorderCrisis even worse. She says nothing else works. Really? Last year, we had the lowest illegal immigration IN 45 YEARS. This year, we have the highest in 20 years."

Not to be outdone, AOC retorted, "Ted, this is pretty rich coming from someone who fled their own home (and responsibilities) during an environmental crisis to cross the border and seek refuge in Mexico. Also you funded cages, expanded cages, and yet you’re complaining about cages. You have no policy, just puff." For good measure, she added another tweet, "Maybe Mexico shouldn’t let YOU in the next time you try to run away from your job to sip umbrella drinks in Cancún."

Democrats have been ripping on Cruz for months now, since the Senator made a quick trip to Mexico while Texas was facing a major winter storm. Despite facing calls to resign, Cruz has been defiant. He has also been actively attacking Democrats for their position over the border crisis. Cruz, along with 17 other Republican Senators toured the border at Rio Grande late last month. They also visited one of ICE's detention facilities in Donna, Texas. The Republicans slammed Biden for his handling of the crisis, even though most of the facilities and protocols were the same during the Trump presidency.

While the battle continued, many users took it as an opportunity to troll both lawmakers.

'I'd like to report the slaughter of a Senator'

Ted Cruz was easily the more popular victim for the trolls. One person said, "Maybe Mexico should build that wall. Keep climate refugees like the Cruz family out." Another joked, "Yes hello @FBI I’d like to report the slaughter of a Senator"

Wall jokes seemed to be the flavor of the day, with another user saying, "It would help US-Mexico relations to build the wall... around Ted Cruz"

Another user pointed out, "Teddy... you don’t do this Twitter thing very well. AOC just owned you."

Other attacked AOC as well. One user said, "Maybe you should learn the meaning of insurgent before you use it." Another said, "AOC how come under Trump we did not have these problems? Stop the baloney everyone sees through your lies"

Many others just sat back and enjoyed the show, tweeting GIFs in response.

While Republicans and Democrats engage in a war of words over the crisis, it continues to grow at the southern border. More and more refugees are making their way into the US, causing the system to be overwhelmed. Biden recently turned to a non-profit for help housing migrants, but even that seems to be insufficient. Last week, Vice President Kamala Harris was put in charge of addressing the issue but is yet to take any significant steps.
