LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Sweet Tooth', a Netflix fantasy-drama created by Jim Mickle and based on Jeff Lemire's comic book of the same name, will return for Season 2 sooner than you think. The first season, starring Christian Convery as the lead actor, debuted on Netflix on June 4, 2021, and was well received by critics and audiences alike.

The show tells the story of Gus, a young boy-deer hybrid searching for his estranged mother in a world plagued by a deadly virus and a younger generation of hybrid children. Ever since the show released fans have been asking the same question: Why did the author choose the title 'Sweet Tooth' for such a dark comic book? However, there is a hidden message behind the name.

The literal translation of 'Sweet Tooth'

Gus and Jepperd, played by actor Nonso Anozie, have been commuting together. While Jepperd was recuperating from his injury, Gus eats up all of his chocolates and snacks in the comic books by Lemire. In Mickle's version, Gus is tricked out of the house by the hunters with a trail of sweets until Jepperd shows up and saves him. Even though the sequences in the comic book and series differ, Gus's weakness for candy stays the same, as does the fact that Jepperd gives Gus the nickname 'Sweet Tooth,' which can also be construed as the little boy's preference for the sweeter things in life.

Contradictory themes in 'Sweet Tooth'

The term 'Sweet Tooth' refers to a person who appreciates sweet things, yet it carries a deeper meaning in the show. While "sweet" is believed to be a positive word that evokes happy emotions in people, "tooth" is an aggressive word that signifies fighting. In terms of the show, it can be said that although there are certain sweet moments with Gus and his bond with Jepperd, and of course the hope the two share for the world, it can also be violent and scary, which was seen when Gus and his fellow hybrids were captured at the end of Season 1. The name brings together Gus' hope for a world that is gradually turning cruel and greedy.

Season 2 of ‘Sweet Tooth’ returns on April 27 with Gus and his other hybrid friends fighting back against Abbott and crew.
