PHOENIX, ARIZONA: Donna Kelce has become quite a celebrity just days before her sons Jason and Travis became the first brothers to play against each other in Super Bowl history as the Kansas City Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, February 12.

Kelce had fans gushing as she delivered cookies for her boys on stage while they spoke to the media on 'Opening Night' of Super Bowl week on Monday, February 6. She arrived at the venue wearing her signature half Chiefs, half Eagles jersey. Meanwhile, an online petition for Kelce to do the ceremonial coin toss before Sunday's game has already garnered more than 170,000 signatures and counting.

'Here's the thing'

Kelce and her husband, Ed, had mostly stayed away from the media limelight over the years before the former garnered fame as she followed her boys at various games often in a jersey with Travis' front stitched to Jason's back, per the The Daily Mail. Amber Smith, a fan, launched a petition on Change.org for Kelce to do the coin flip before the game, with nearly 180,000 fans signing it at the time of publication. The petition eventually caught the attention of the Kelce brothers and their mother. Kelce said she would do it, but only on one condition. "Here's the thing," she began on her son's 'New Heights' podcast, continuing, "There are so many legends and people that have their blood, sweat, and tears on that field. And for a mom that's never played football, I don't think that's the right place for me to be."

The brothers, however, responded by telling her she was sort of discounting the mothers of every player to have played the game. "Well here's the thing," Kelce continued, "I don't know if I would be a distraction. Would I be a distraction out there for you guys? That's what I would worry about." Her sons quickly assured her it wouldn't be a distraction in the slightest. Jason then asked her if she would do the honors if the majority of fans voted for it. She agreed that she would do it in that case, but only on the condition that it wouldn't be a distraction. "I would [do it] if the two of you say I would not be a distraction... and you'll be focussing on the game plans," she said, to which Travis replied, "You're in," before joking, "I'll tell [NFL commissioner] Roger [Goodell]."

Historic clash

The brothers have each won a Super Bowl previously. Jason's Eagles were triumphant five years ago when they beat the New England Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII. Travis and the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV. The siblings were asked about the historical matchup at Opening Night. "We're always rooting for each other," Jason reportedly said, adding, "I always want him to do well, but I would sure love to get this one over his head and have at least something over top of Trav."

Travis recalled what it was like growing up and competing with his older brother. "What he did do is he gave me a cool perspective on how to beat somebody that's better than you," he said, adding, "I kind of got to learn the mind games at a different level as a younger kid, so he's helped me get to where I'm at without a doubt. But he got the majority of the wins for sure."
