Steve Schmidt, who served as John McCain's campaign manager in 2008, lashed out at the latter's daughter Meghan McCain on Saturday, May 7, calling her an “entitled bully” and “fourth-generation wannabe" and thus sparking a public feud.

Schmidt, 51, opened the can of worms by responding to reports that McCain's new book 'Bad Republican: A Memoir' had tanked with only 244 copies sold since it came out in late April. Schmidt, who was her father's senior campaign strategist and adviser for his failed 2008 presidential bid, took the opportunity to comment on those reports amid allegations of sexual abuse that have plagued the Lincoln Project, a political action committee that he co-founded.

“I can explain this,” Schmidt wrote of McCain's poor book sales, before calling her a “spoiled rotten, entitled bully" whom he kicked off the campaign's plane in 2008 "because of her outrageous behavior.

“Everyone who has ever worked with Meghan McCain from ABC, The View, Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, and a thousand others have seen the unfiltered version of what the whole of America has seen,” he added.

Schmidt then addressed allegations of pedophilia that have surrounded the Lincoln Project, a group he co-founded. "@MeghanMcCain has been trying to have a conversation with me for almost 14 years. Once again, today, she called me a Pedophile. It is a slander. It is disgusting. It is untrue and it says everything about her. Here she is liking the tweet of a far-right liar and piece of filth," he wrote, referring to a tweet by Grabien founder and journalist Tom Elliot.

“I was the first adult that Meghan McCain ever encountered that she heard the word NO from,” Schmidt began in a new thread. “I told her she was unimportant and that the Presidential election wasn’t about her." He went on to allege that her own father "was appalled" by her conduct on the campaign trail, and accused her of throwing “tantrums” that “were beyond anything I have ever witnessed from any other human being.” Schmidt added, “Raging, screaming, crying, at the staff, at the makeup people at Secret Service."

Schmidt said he was breaking his silence "after 14 years of abuse and attacks" as he called McCain a "bully" who was "unaccomplished." He wrote, “She has rejected her Family’s history of service for a shallow and purposeless celebrity where she trades on a famous name like a fourth-generation wannabe clipping coupons while pretending to be an heir."

That said, Schmidt's unfettered rant sparked outrage among political pundits and journalists.

"I hope liberals are proud of their moral hero, the conscience of the nation, who weaponizes private conversations he claims to have had with someone's mother, then publicizes them to malign his critics. Transfer more of your cash to him to help defeat TRUMP!" journalist Glenn Greenwald tweeted.

"Ahh, yes, I also once told Schmidt I don’t like one of my kids. AGATHA WINK," Mary Katharine Ham added. "Dowdian vibes of standing righteously against alleged awfulness by being truly awful. Don’t do this."

"Every day you somehow find a way to make yourself look like an even bigger piece of s*** than the day before," journalist Tom Elliott said.

While McCain is yet to respond to the furor at the time of publication, she has chimed in on reports of her book's failure. The 37-year-old political commentator noted on Twitter Saturday that the audio version of her memoir was actually #2 on the Audible best-seller list.
