It's not often that a guest star on 'Grey's Anatomy' goes on to have a full-fledged new role in the Grey's verse. But that's exactly the case for Khalilah Joi, who after a powerful guest role on 'Grey's Anatomy' two years ago, will now play a new character, Condola Vargas, on the firefighter drama, 'Station 19'.

So who exactly is Condola Vargas and what is her connection with Dean Miller (Okieriete Onaodowan) on 'Station 19'? Before we focus on where Khalilah Joi is going with her character arc on 'Station 19', let us see where she has come from. Khalilah caught the eye of 'Grey's Anatomy' show creator Krista Vernoff, when she played the victim of sexual assault in the 'Grey’s Anatomy' episode 'Silent All These Years in Season 15, which aired on March 28, 2019.

Vernoff said about Khalilah coming back to the Grey's universe, "Khalilah Joi was the heart and soul of ‘Silent All These Years’ and I wanted to work with her again just because she’s such an extraordinary artiste. And I wanted to give her a chance to play a relatively pain-free character. It’s a joy to have her back!"

So who exactly is Condola Vargas? Well to start with she's an extremely accomplished litigator. She makes her appearance on the show to help Dean sue the police after he was arrested and tackled to the ground while trying to reunite a distraught mother with her daughter. Since the show is still set in May and June of 2020, not surprisingly the focus will be on the pressing matters of the time including the 'Black Lives Matter' movement.

Krista Vernoff, in her interview with Deadline, goes on to say, "This is a major plotline going forward through our whole season. Our season is still living in May and June of 2020, and so, if you recall, in April, May, June of 2020, we were processing as a nation the death of George Floyd, and the uprising in the wake of that, and so, we are bravely confronting a lot of these issues moving forward on the show.”

Besides her legal expertise, Condola Vargas also brings her effortless chic to the show and considering she's had a romantic past with Dean it will be interesting to see how this particular dynamic develops. You can catch this fresh face on 'Station 19' on Thursdays at 8|7c on ABC.
