'What if she's my long lost cousin': Internet reacts after Meghan Markle reveals she is '43% Nigerian'

MONTECITO, CALIFORNIA: Meghan Markle has opened up about her African roots in the latest episode of her podcast Archetypes. The Duchess of Sussex said that she is 43% Nigerian after taking a genealogy test a couple of years ago.

Markle, 41, claimed she is "going to start to dig deeper into all this" during her conversation with comedians Issa Rae and Ziwe Fumudoh on the episode titled 'Upending The Angry Black Women Myth.' In another part of the episode, which was just made available on Spotify, the mother-of-two also stressed that "telling people what you need does not make you demanding," while speaking about “angry Black woman” stereotype

In her explanation to the Nigerian-American comedian Ziwe Fumudoh, the ‘Suit’ alum said, "I just had my genealogy done a couple of years ago... I'm 43 percent Nigerian." adding that, "I'm going to start to dig deeper into all this because anybody that I've told, especially Nigerian women, are like 'What!'". A stunned Ziwe, 30, responded, "This is huge for our community. No, honestly, you do look like a Nigerian, you look like my Aunt Uzo. So this is great."

Markle can be heard chuckling at her guest's exuberance as she opens up about her heritage during the big podcast moment. She is a passionate advocate for battling racism and bigotry, and this is the first time she has spoken publicly about her ancestry. In this week's episode, the Duchess of Sussex discusses the stereotypes of Black female roles in television, drawing on her own experience as a former actress. 

The Duchess of Sussex's shocking discovery has sparked mixed reactions on Twitter. While some users believed that she could be "Yoruba," others were overjoyed that "a Nigerian is in the royal family." One Twitter user wrote, "It's good to know that a Nigerian is in the Royal family. Since Meghan Markle has revealed that she is 43% Nigerian, Then we Nigerians can be proud to say that we are in the Royal family, even though she and her husband have denounced the family." One user said, "No wonder she has such Finesse, elegance and grit." Another user wrote, "Meghan Markle discovers she is '43% Nigerian... Her family house is in Tilde local government in bauchi state and they are Fulani and she's my aunty." One user penned, "The duchess of Sussex just confirmed that she is "43% Nigerian" Nigeria, let me go check my own genealogy probably I'll be able to confirm that I am 80% American coz I no fit lie this Naija don tire me." Duchess of Sussex's revelation attracted hilarious reactions as well. One user tweeted, "when the royal family hears Meghan Markle is 43% Nigerian." "Meghan Markle is 43% Nigerian, what if she's my long lost cousin." Another user wrote while asking for her Nigerian name, "Do You have a Nigerian Name for her? The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle has revealed via her Podcast that she is 43% Nigerian. So again we ask, Do you have a Nigerian name for her ?"



 



 



 

One user Twitter user said, "Meghan, Duchess of Sussex is 43% Nigerian. This is great for my Nigerian sisters!! I wonder if she's either Igbo or Yoruba."
