DAVIS COUNTY, UTAH: Old photos and videos of a Utah student, who was reportedly killed on March 1 in a traffic stop by the officers of the Farmington Police Department, have surfaced online. The throwback images and clips were on the slain Chase Allan’s Instagram account, showing him at a shooting range. All of them were shared in early 2018.

The caption of the post read, “First time skeet shooting, I can’t thank my grandpa enough for the shotgun! Someday I hope to pass it on.” This comes as Chase’s cousin Austin Allan released a confusing statement on Facebook after the unfortunate incident. He said, “I feel strongly that mistakes were made on both sides. I wish people complied more, I wish police didn’t jump the gun.”

'Police do or try to do good'

Elsewhere, Austin’s lengthy post stated, “I know the media can be a troll sometimes, but I just wanted to say that when I posted my families statement about what happened with the Farmington shooting, I wanted them to be able to voice what they felt was needed. I don’t know what the situation was,  and I don’t know if I would use the same wording in the statement they gave, but I do understand a lack of information and strong feelings can definitely conclude in someone using the words they used.”

The post continued, “It feels like what they said could be the truth, without more information, who’s to say? At times like these, words are cheaper than evidence. All words, all parties, including the police, media, and everyone who said something, because sadly, words don’t really prove anything by themselves.

Austin added, “All we initially knew was that Chase was here, then he wasn’t, and that he was apparently shot by police. What do you do with that information? You defend your family, until there’s more evidence to say exactly what happened. I believe that a majority of the time, the police do or try to do good. I try to put myself in their shoes, if I felt my life was in danger, what would I do?”

'Was it unjustified fear by the police?'

The Facebook share also mentioned, “I don’t know if the gun was next to Chase, if he had it in the passenger seat, on the floor, or if he never had a gun. At what point and why was he fired on? Was it unjustified fear by the police, was there an altercation, why did the six of them do what they did, not the least of all, WHAT, if anything, did Chase do to cause police to use lethal force? Right now, I just wish I had more information. Why? I have a lot of 'Why' questions. I wish I could see what happened.

He added, “I’m angry, and sad, because I lost a family member, but I’m not sure who or what to be angry at yet. Not my cousin, he’s physically gone now. I am angry at this whole situation though.” Austin then reminisced Chase and said that he was a “good man.” He added, “I’ll always love you. I’m not sure what happened, but you deserve to have your story told by both sides. I wish it was by you yourself. You will be missed by many, but I believe in Heaven, and that you will see us again in a distant year, and day.”
