Freeform's hit mermaid series 'Siren' has been greenlit for a third season, even though the show is currently on a midseason hiatus following season two. The fantasy show has garnered massive popularity on both sides of the Atlantic, while it airs on SyFy in the UK. Formerly titled 'The Deep', the drama first premiered with its debut season in March of 2018, and immediately soared to massive popularity with its intense thriller narrative involving fantasy creatures of the ocean and marine biologists trying to tame the havoc and chaos they wreak on land.

Release date

'Siren' was renewed for a third season on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, but no official date has been announced as of yet. Right now, fans can only look forward to the midseason premiere of season two, which begins airing on June 16.

Plot

The story of 'Siren' is set in the coastal town of Briston Cove, which was once believed to be the home of the merpeople. The plot kicks off when a mysterious young woman begins attacking the small fishing town after her sister was captured by the military. Called Ryn Fisher, the young teen is a mermaid with a dark secret who goes about wreaking havoc in Bristal Cove, while two marine biologists, Ben and Maddie, try to discover what triggered her actions. Considering season two is yet to conclude, it's hard to tell what season three will unfold in terms of the story, but right now, things are not looking great for Ryn. In a statement following the renewal of season three, Freeform teased what's in store through a statement that revealed: "Ben and Maddie are uncertain about the mermaids' future after the deadly consequences of the attack on the oil rig and, with the mermaids returning to sea, are left feeling lost without Ryn. Once Helen learns she's not the only one of her kind, she discovers there is a dark side to her people's past."

Creator

'Siren' was co-created by Dean White and Eric Wald. White is known for his works on 'The 100' (2014), 'The Shield' (2002) and 'Past Life' (2010), while Wald was behind the script for 'Siren' and 'View from the Top'.

Cast

Eline Powell

The Belgian actress plays the role of the lead character, Ryn Fisher — the head of the mermaids, who is on the lookout for her older sister, Donna. In one of her interviews, Powell had revealed that to portray her mermaid character articulately for the show, she decided to draw inspiration from the accent of Icelandic singer Björk.

We see the actor in the role of the marine biologist Ben on the show. The character helps Ryn and is totally enchanted by her melodious and irresistibly hypnotic siren song. The English actor is best known for playing the role of Jay Keaton in the series 'The Fugitives', and for portraying Elliott Baden in 'The Cut'.
