A "side-eye" is defined as "a sidelong glance or glare, especially when expressing disdain, mistrust, disapproval, or veiled curiosity." It means the same when we talk about the side-eye trend on TikTok .

Several individuals are now using the term "side eye" in response to tweets, memes, current events, and more on social media platforms. This new trend is the latest to take over social media platforms and can be seen all over the internet, especially Twitter and TikTok.

The expression implies that a person is making a judgement about something solely based on their visual perception. The gesture may not be new to anyone who knows how to read someone down, but TikTok amplified it after a recent Live video surfaced on the platform.

What is the 'side eye' trend all about?

The popular TikTok fad allows people to express their disapproval of someone or something by leaving a remark that includes this phrase. A side eye is often employed to express discontent in regular face-to-face conversations when something appears unsatisfactory. So, comments including this phrase have evolved into a technique for online users to express their disapproval of the current piece of material.

Another form of this trend shows people making facial expressions while playing the phrase "side eye" in the background of the video.

Cynthia Mmasi: The Tiktoker behind the 'side-eye' trend

Like most TikTokers who go viral from one or two videos, Cynthia Mmasi was living her best small-content-creator life before her voice began circulating everywhere.

According to her account, the 19-year-old influencer lives a normal everyday existence which includes hanging out with her friends, responding to other voiceover trends, and dancing in the bathroom. Cynthia also enjoys updating her followers on her latest hairstyle or any other musing that comes to her mind. Also, Cynthia proudly represents her Nigerian/Jamaican ethnicity in her TikTok bio.

'It's horribly failed'

Several user expressed their dislike towards this trend. A user wrote, "Tiktok stop saying 'side eye' to everything challenge: HORRIBLY FAILED". Another wrote, "The next time I hear “bombastic side eye” on TikTok, I’m tossing my phone out the window."
