'Self-entitled jerk': Internet piles on Marco Rubio for saying he didn't have time to take Covid test

Florida Senator Rubio's decision comes days after he whined about the list of requirements to attend the SOTU during his speech at a conference

Florida Senator Marco Rubio said he won't attend President Joe Biden's State of the Union address that was held on Tuesday, March 1, as he had no time to spare to get the required Covid test done ahead of the speech. The Senator told HuffPost's Igor Bobic, "I don’t have time to go take a COVID test today. I only take a test if I’m sick."

Rubio's decision comes days after he whined about the list of requirements to attend the SOTU during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on February 26. "For the first time in American history you now have people having to produce paper to go in somewhere, to sit somewhere, to go to the State of the Union," Rubio said. "You’ve got to show them I’m vaccinated, I took a test yesterday, they took my temperature, you know, all this stuff."

Also, prior to his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Rubio gave a hint that he would not be attending SOTU in his tweet on February 18 that said: "Below is the #CovidTheatre rituals required to attend the State of the Union. No thank you, maybe next time." Rubio also included a screenshot of the outlined Covid-19 precautions to attend the State of the Union in his tweet. The requirements include a negative Covid-19 PCR test taken one day before the address, wearing an N-95 or KN-95 mask at all times, a negative health screening, and social distancing.

Although Rubio kept his promise of not attending the State of the Union Address held on Tuesday, netizens called him out for his excuse.

One user remarked, "I find COVID a convenient excuse for bailing on a puppet show. What, if anything, new will the doddering old fool say?. Another added, "The rules don’t apply to lil Marco @marcorubio is so important. Better than everyone else. So so busy. #emptysuit. Self Entitled jerk." A third commented, "This is not Mr. Rubio's finest hour. The free world has not faced a threat like the one we are facing now since World War II. We need to stand tall - together as Americans. Mr. Rubio should not be engaged in a temper tantrum over a simple Covid test."

A fourth wrote, "Millions of Americans have been enduring daily testing in order to keep their co-workers safe and prevent wider spread, but Marco is too much of a baby to do that, and 'too busy' to take 20 seconds out of his day." "Doesn’t have time to keep the US Capitol safe. Figures", remarked the fifth user. Another one added, "Honestly, we're not far from a time when the only people attending the SOTU are members of the President's Party." Someone else commented, "It takes like two minutes." Another pitched in, "Just a point-in-time observation 5 p.m. Monday: Members were able to get into the Capitol testing site 2 mins from the Senate subway and get tested with no wait."
