Sam Kerr, the star of the Australian women's soccer team, recently went 'Instagram official' about her romance with US soccer star Kristie Mewis through a post of them kissing on Sunday, August 8. The Matildas player, 27, shared a Polaroid photo of Mewis, 30, sitting on her lap as they shared a passionate kiss, tagging the latter in the caption and adding a red heart emoji.

This comes after Kerr broke up with her long-term partner Nikki Stanton. Mewis, on the other hand, shared a selfie with Kerr on her own Instagram Stories on Sunday, which showed the pair pressing their heads together. Some of the other recognized women soccer players at the Tokyo Olympics are Alex Morgan, Lindsey Horan, Becky Sauerbrunn and Christen Press.

'Guys it's official'

The Polaroid photo went viral on Twitter as social media users reacted to the pair finally confirming their affair publicly. The two were seen flirting with each other at the Tokyo Olympics. "Me acting as if sam kerr & kristie mewis being together is brand new information even though I watched them flirt in their Instagram comment sections," one of them said, while another wrote, "Kristie mewis and sam kerr r officially my favorite couple." A third noted, "So did sam kerr purposely throw the sweden match to face the usa aga." 

The next commented, "GUYS IT’S OFFICIAL EVERYONE SAY THANK YOU SAM KERR AND KRISTIE MEWIS." One more said, "Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis IG official." A commenter tweeted, "Sam kerr and kristie mewis really weren’t kidding with all the flirting omg." A person reacted with, "Nah sam kerr and kristie mewis were fr flirting???? i thought they were kidding im boo boo the fool."

Mewis' 'sportsmanship and kindness'

Last week, at the Tokyo Olympics, the football stars sparked romance rumors after Mewis was seen comforting Kerr following the Matildas' defeat. After Australia's 4-3 loss to the US during a bronze medal match, Mewis took a moment to sit with Kerr on the field. The camera spotted Kerr nuzzling her face into Kerr's shoulder as she wrapped an arm around her back. At the time, the mainstream media refused to jump to any conclusions and lauded Mewis for her "sportsmanship and kindness." However, as soon as the pair went IG official, people starting mocking Kerr and Mewis' relationship coverage by the media.

What amazing sportsmanship and kindness from Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis after the US-Australia game!" One more commented, "Wait the scenes when a clueless reporter asks Sam Mewis about consoling Sam Kerr. Man the f***ing scenes."
 

Sam Kerr's split with Nikki Stanton

Kerr and Mewis' relationship comes after the former's recent split from her girlfriend of seven years, Stanton, 30, who is a fellow American soccer player. Their relationship ended in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics, The Daily Telegraph reported last week. Following the breakup, Kerr said that she had simply 'fallen out of love' with Nikki, whom she had met in 2014 while playing soccer in the US. Apparently distance was the main issue between the two with Stanton living stateside while Kerr is now primarily based in the United Kingdom.

The former couple confirmed their split to the newspaper and even unfollowed each other on Instagram. A friend told the publication that Kerr was the one who ended things and Nikki was upset "but she is healing," a friend told the publication, but added that, "if there is any sadness around the break up it certainly wasn't evident" at the Tokyo Olympics.
