‘Depressed’ Sam Bankman-Fried denied $250K cash bail offer after he begged for release from jail over vegan diet
BAHAMAS, NASSAU: Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the famous cryptocurrency firm FTX, was arrested on Monday, December 12, 2022, over wire fraud, wire fraud conspiracy, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The 30-year-old appeared in court on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, and begged the judge to let him get out of jail as he follows a strict vegan diet and was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder.
The cryptocurrency firm owner was willing to pay a sum of $ 250,000 for the same. However, he also hinted that he would not waive an extradition hearing on being sent back to the US as he faces a slew of federal charges, including fraud and making illegal campaign contributions.

Bankman-Fried's lawyer Mark S Cohen claimed, "Mr Bankman-Fried is reviewing the charges with his legal team and considering all of his legal options." He has been on antidepressants recently and during the hearing, he was asked if he needed water to have it. He responded, “I don’t need water, but I do need to take my shirt off to take them," reported New York Post.
Chief Magistrate Joy Ann Ferguson-Pratt later issued the notice and claimed that she needed time to consider the arguments because “rushed justice is no justice at all,” and ordered to keep him under custody till February 8, 2023.
The charges also included campaign finance violations for his big-money political donations. The founder also has charges from the SEC. Bankman-Fried came to the hearing wearing a blue suit and white shirt and was supported by his parents, Standford professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried. If convicted of all charges, he can remain in jail for almost 115 years.
