Plans to expand the Barbie franchise by foraying into feature films have been in the pipes for quite some time now. The beloved toy was supposed to make her big-screen debut in 2014 with Diablo Cody having reworked a script that was originally penned by Jenny Bicks of 'Sex and the City' fame.

The baton was later picked up by Amy Schumer in 2016, who boarded it with a script by Hillary Winston. The film was supposed to follow a woman who was booted out of "Barbie-ville" for not meeting its standards of beauty and physical perfection. However, the project fell through, with Schumer clarifying that it was due to creative differences when it came to the vision of Barbie, as she wanted Barbie to be an "ambitious inventor" while Mattel and the studio had other ideas. Eventually, Greta Gerwig was brought in by Warner Bros and the 'Lady Bird' has set the ball rolling, casting Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, among others, in key roles in 'Barbie.' Gosling's first look as Ken was released by Warner Bros and boy did the Internet have a lot to say! Were the reactions positive? Are the masses excited? Read on to find out!

Initial reactions seemed to compare Ryan Gosling's look to that of Freddie Prinze Jr in the 'Scooby Doo' films. "Freddie Prinze Jones is playing Ken?! Oh, Blossom is looking at this right now and she is screaming her head off with glee about this. I might need to see an ear Doctor soon," a tweet read. "For some reason, I legit couldn't tell that was Ryan Gosling as Ken. I thought that was Freddie Prinze Jr. or something. lol," read another. "i’m just gonna say it. freddie prince jr wound make a better Ken doll than ryan gosling idc if he’s old now!!! they can do that weird editing stuff to make him look young again," a fan tweeted. A tweet of a similar opinion, read "And when Ryan Gosling is finished being " Ken" he can be " Freddie" in the new Scooby Doo movie."

The negative response began to pour in soon after. "I can tell instantly this is going to be terrible. .. I keep saying to myself "For the love of god, NO!".. But still kinda thinking, f**k it," a not-so-hopeful fan shared. "Ryan Gosling as Ken actually looks so bad that it activated my fight flight or freeze response and I punched a hole through my phone," tweeted another. Another seconded, tweeting "ryan gosling looks horrible as ken. wtf is that yellow toupee? that shit ages him so bad."

Some fans chose not to reach a conclusion just yet while others backed the first look with tweets such as "You clearly can't tell because you don't even know what the movie is yet. I know for a fact that it's a sarcastic, satirical spoof film and this image has been put out specifically to poke fun at people that don't know what this film is going to be" and "how are people saying ryan gosling as ken is bad casting when they don't even know what the movie is about yet."
