US Supreme Court on June 24 struck down Roe v Wade, which guaranteed Americans' right to an abortion for nearly 50 years. As a result, protesters, who believe that this move has taken away a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body, went in support of a sex strike on June 25 as 'abstinence' started trending on Twitter with more than 27K tweets.

A 24-year-old Brianna Campbell told New York Post, “If you’re a man who won’t get a vasectomy, even though it’s reversible, and you’re not out in the streets fighting for my rights, you do not deserve to have sex with me.” Among many questioning men for expressing anti-abortion views, Caroline Healey, a 22-year-old event coordinator, argued, “I think it’s absolutely valid for us to be withholding the Holy Grail that men seem to think is important. Why shouldn’t we withhold it if we’re always worried that they’re not going put a condom on, that they’re going take one off after we ask them to."

NY Post quoted Maya Demri, a survivor of rape, who stressed that women need to do everything in their legal power to get their rights back. She said, “I cannot sit here and imagine what my sisters in red states are going to do if they’re getting pregnant by rape and need to not just carry the tragedy of the worst thing that has happened to them, but also carry them in the body for nine months."

#SexStrike took off over the weekend

A number of individuals called for abstinence, along with #SexStrike. One wrote, "All the women in America need to go on a #sexstrike !! Let’s see how the men react!!" Another commented, "Dear women, We have more power then you realize! Without us the world would stop spinning, take charge of your bodies! This is not the time we sit this out! Is time to unite, strategize and fight back! 1/2 #scotus #legalizeabortion #womenunite #vote #sexstrike"

Debating abstinence, a user said, "If abortion is illegal, then the punishment should equally apply to the father, don't you think? After all, it's all about abstinence, right?" Another person argued, "If Americans don't want abortions then don't have sex. If every American woman chose abstinence as her preferred method of birth control, Roe vs Wade would be reinstated within a month. #auspol #RoeVWade"

The present status in the US

As millions of American women have lost the legal right to have an abortion after the US Supreme Court overturned a landmark ruling that for nearly half a century had protected women, it is now up to each state to determine whether women can have legal abortions or not. However, 26 states are either certain or likely to ban abortions, as per the reports.
