'Something pissed someone off': Retired Moscow captain says Idaho killer was motivated by revenge

MOSCOW, IDAHO: The murder of four college students last month was likely committed by someone who knew at least one of the victims and may have been looking for revenge, according to a retired Moscow police captain who spent 20 years looking into every local homicide in the Idaho city. In a candid interview with DailyMail, retired Moscow Police Captain Paul Kwaitkowski, 64, explained that "when you use the word 'targeted,' it means somewhere along the line we met." He added, "Somewhere along the line, something bad happened, something that pissed someone off enough to go after these people."
Almost a month after Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin were fatally stabbed in their off-campus residence, Kwaitkowski spoke as pressure mounted on the authorities to identify a suspect and find a murder weapon in the quadruple murder investigation.

Kwaitkowski, like his fellow employees, claims he does not know who the attacker's intended target was and speculates that all of the four victims may have been the key focus. He stated to Daily Mail, "I don't know who the target was. Maybe there was only one target, and the other three were collateral damage." He added, "Why they were targeted, nobody knows yet - that involves deciphering all the digital data that they're going to have to go through. You have 20 people looking at tens of thousands of pieces of information. That will lead them to something. But it's going to take time."
Meanwhile, Steve Goncalves, Kaylee's father, has publicly expressed his displeasure with the police investigation into his daughter's horrific death, which was discovered last week to have been "significantly more brutal" injuries than those sustained by her three friends. On Monday, December 12, the grieving father Steve revealed further information about Kaylee's wounds, saying the knife had cut open her liver and lungs in addition to giving her "big open gouges," according to Fox News. Goncalves stated his daughter's wounds "definitely did not match" those of Mogen, who was found in the same bed as Kaylee. After questioning coroner Cathy Mabbutt about the number of times the victims were stabbed, Mabbutt says, "sir, I don't think stabs is the right word, it was like tears, like this was a strong weapon, not like a stab," Goncalves told Fox news. "She said these were big open gouges. She said it was quick. These weren't something where you were going to be able to call 911. They were not going to slowly bleed out."
According to Goncalves, the coroner's office believes the killer was a "strong individual" but detectives have not identified the person's gender. He, on the other hand, believes it is the act of a "sadistic male." He added, "It was a hell of a battle going on down there from what the coroner told us." Goncalves stated, "I got outraged by them not just coming out and saying this was a woman or a man because they should know by the amount of strength it took to deliver the injuries. They're just being cowards. There are girls walking around the street right now that deserve to know. They should be looking out for a sadistic male," as cited by Daily Mail.
