Spoilers for 'Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story' Episode 3

LONDON, ENGLAND: While the end of ‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’ episode 2 hinted at King George’s mental illness, episode 3 gives more insights into the secret doctor’s consultations, his obsession with calling himself a "farmer" and working in the garden, and avoiding social gatherings.

‘Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’ Episode 3 highlights the agreement between the King and Queen to spend time together on "even days." This is because both want to get over their marital duties by giving an heir to the throne as soon as possible. Besides, there is too much gossip about their sexual relationship and whether Queen Charlotte is expecting. Additionally, Queen Charlotte and King George perfectly perform their duties as husband and wife on Coronation Day and showcase themselves as loving partners.

‘Living for the happiness or misery of a great nation’

On Coronation Day, Brimsley and Reynolds get into a steaming argument when Brimsley inquires about King George as Queen Charlotte calls for him. In response, Reynolds lies to him, saying, “King is studying science in the library.” However, Brimsely doesn’t buy it and luckily gets a peek inside the library, noticing a physician examining King George. He then questions Reynolds as to why the King is not being examined by the royal physician. He responds, “Brimsley, you have seen nothing.”

Brimsley is honest and loyal to his Queen, just as honest and loyal Reynolds is to his King. When Queen Charlotte mentions social meetings at the palace involving King George, Brimsley tells her he "does not allow such social events at the palace.” During their conversation, Brimsley hints about the doctor and baffles Queen Charlotte.

Later, after a sexual encounter, Queen Charlotte asks King about his visit to the doctor, and he reacts angrily. He tells her, "The Crown is to be checked on Coronation Day, and the library is the examination room.” Queen Charlotte despises him for not telling her the truth and fiercely replies, “After all, I am now living for the happiness or misery of a great nation.”

‘Farmer George’ and Venus

In the middle of the night, Charlotte finds his husband mumbling and scratching. She calls him, and he runs into the garden barefoot muttering, "Farmer. Farmer King. George the Farmer," followed by Queen Charlotte. She tries to stop him, but he gets naked and shouts at “Venus.” Charlotte helps by comforting him and referring to herself as Venus and him as Farmer George.

The episode strikes an emotional chord with the audience and leaves them questioning King George’s mental illness. Let’s see what we learn about it in the next episode.
