Project Veritas. the far-right activist group known for spreading conspiracy theories and disinformation targeted Dr. Anthony Fauci in a new video released on January 10, 2022. Since the group is banned from Twitter, the video was first published and heavily promoted by a user named Eric Spracklen, and it has now gone on to catch the attention of other notable right-wing celebrities like Rep. Paul Gosar and Candice Owens.

The new video focuses on Fauci's reported support for gain of function research, which conspiracy theorists claim is what led the Wuhan Institute of Virology to create the Covid-19 virus in the first place. In multiple Congressional hearings, Fauci denied ever supporting such research with the lab, despite leaked e-mails proving that he might have. The claims even led to a memorable exchange between Sen. Rand Paul and Fauci, with the Senator becoming one of the most vocal critics of the infectious disease expert.

Most of the claims have remained conspiracy theories to date, with far-right groups going to great lengths to discredit Fauci, and America's vaccination program. Those claims were given a major boost after Veritas released a new video, and an article detailing the new dirt it found on Fauci. But, as the group may have conceded, it could also be entirely fake.

Dr. Anthony Fauci testifies before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, July 20, 2021, on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Cases of COVID-19 have tripled over the past three weeks, and hospitalizations and deaths are rising among unvaccinated people.

Veritas's attack on Fauci

In its latest expose, the group claims to have accessed documents from a report by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Hidden in a "top secret share drive", the report claims that in 2018 EcoHealth Alliance approached DARPA for funding for a gain of function research of bat-borne coronaviruses, nicknamed Project Defuse. Initially, DARPA rejected the study, but Veritas claims "NIAID, under the direction of Dr. Fauci, went ahead with the research in Wuhan, China and at several sites across the U.S."

The group also linked the original documents it claimed to have accessed, including one by U.S. Marine Corp Major Joseph Murphy for the DoD Inspector General. Jared Adams, the Chief of Communications for DARPA told Veritas, "It doesn’t sound normal to me. If something resides in a classified setting, then it should be appropriately marked. I’m not at all familiar with unmarked documents that reside in a classified space."

That admission alone might prove to be Veritas's undoing. None of the documents they have linked contain any classification marking or even any form of redactions that are standard for high-level government documents. Instead, they are available in full for anyone to access via Veritas' website. It's unclear if the documents are fake, as DARPA has refused to acknowledge them beyond Adams' comment. Nonetheless, it quickly became fire for the right, while many others remained skeptical.

'Time for some arrests'

Rep. Gosar tweeted, "Jaw-dropping report just dropped by Project Veritas. Never before seen military Documents obtained by #ProjectVeritas about Gain of Function directly contradict Dr. Fauci testimony under oath." Candace Owens said, "The Project Veritas video is nothing short of amazing. Everyone please head over to youtube and watch it in its entirety." At the time of reporting, others like Donald Trump Jr, Ted Cruz, and Lauren Boebart have not yet shared or commented on the viral video. But that didn't stop users from flooding Twitter with support for the group. "Time for some arrests and trials to start taking place," one user replied to Spracklen.

Others though, were quick to mock support for the claims. "Your neurons could use quite a bit of gain in function," one user trolled Spracklen. Another noted, "Because obviously, a government-orchestrated scheme and coverup, would be held in hidden documents by the government." One person replied, "I'd trust visions of unicorns and care bears before I'd trust project veritas."

The Veritas video goes on to make several other concerning claims, including that ivermectin can be used as a cure for Covid-19, which has repeatedly been proven false by doctors.
