After the phenomenal success of the Jane Austen-inspired romance series 'Bridgerton', Netflix is going the extra mile by directly adapting an evergreen classic by the popular nineteenth-century author. The streaming giant is about to release 'Persuasion,' starring Dakota Johnson.

Persuasion follows the Jane Austen heroine Anne Elliot as she meets her former lover Captain Wentworth eight years after being persuaded not to marry him. Will they have a second chance together? Or will they each find love with someone new?

When does ‘Persuasion’ release?

The movie will release on July 15, 2022, at 12:00 AM MST exclusively on Netflix.

What is 'Persuasion’ all about?

The upcoming American adaptation is directed by Carrie Cracknell from a screenplay by Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow, based on the novel of the same name by Jane Austen. The story follows Anne Elliot, a twenty-seven-year-old Englishwoman whose family decides to rent their property to an Admiral and his wife in order to cut costs and pay off debt.

The original synopsis reads, "Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. When Frederick Wentworth - the dashing one she let get away - crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances."

Who stars in ‘Persuasion'?

Dakota Johnson stars in the lead role of 27-year-old Anne Elliot. Alongside her, Cosmo Jarvis, Henry Golding, Richard E Grant, and Nikki Amuka-Bird will appear in the retelling of the 1817 novel.

Dakota Johnson is most known for her roles in the '50 Shades' franchise and 'The Lost Daughter.' The swoony romantic hero Captain Frederick Wentworth will be essayed by Cosmo Jarvis from 'Lady Macbeth', 'Peaky Blinders', and 'My Mother and Other Strangers.' Clearly, he is no stranger to period pieces.

What's the latest news about ‘Persuasion’?

Although the love story between Anne Elliot (Johnson) and Captain Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis) is timeless, the trailer appears to have a fresh, playful quality that had people dusting off 'Fleabag' comparisons once more. Fans think Dakota Johnson is acting like she’s auditioning for an American remake of 'Fleabag' in the 'Persuasion' trailer.

One fan tweeted, "It’s giving Fleabag and honestly I kinda like it???? There will be fourth wall breaking apparently!!!" Another added, "This trailer does sort of make sense if the Netflix folk read a short synopsis of #persuasion rather than the actual novel. Poor Anne. I would watch Mary Crawford’s Fleabag-style retelling of Mansfield Park though. Just saying."
