'Peach is a massive lesbian': NY school teacher tells students Nintendo characters have sexual-gender indentities

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A New York middle school teacher has grabbed headlines for attributing sexual-gender identities to Nintendo characters. Remy Elliott claimed that Princess Peach was a “massive lesbian" and Mario “came out so long ago." Elliott, who is certified as Jeremy William Elliott, is employed by the New York City Department of Education as an English teacher. While she teaches ninth grade English of late, she was previously a teacher for younger grades.

The controversy began when Elliott, who also posts videos of her teaching methods on TikTok, posted a now-deleted video about how she introduced her middle school students to the topic of sexuality by attributing gender and sexual identities to popular Nintendo characters. Nintendo, which is a popular Japanese video game company specializing in video games and gaming consoles, has a multitude of fictional characters which are quite beloved in popular culture.

What Remy Elliott post on TikTok?

For an afterschool PowerPoint night program at a DOE school’s Gay Straight Alliance club, she decided to take a sensational approach of teaching. She said in the video, “So the GSA for the school that I teach at decided to do a PowerPoint night, and I decided to combine two of my favorite interests into one. This is dubiously assigning genders and sexualities to classic Nintendo characters,” per Fox News. 

She then continued to describe each character by their sexual characteristics. “Yoshi is a trans man. He is just living his best life with Berto, and his top surgery turned out amazing. No scars whatsoever. We love that for him,” Elliott said, adding, “Of course, that means that Berto is an ace trans girl.”

Speaking about Princess Peach Toadstool, one of the most beloved female protagonists with the highest number of appearances in video games, Elliott said, “No surprises with Peach. She is a massive cis lesbian… Whenever she’s around Daisy, she just completely forgets how to speak.” She continued, “Toad is obviously a pre-transitioned trans girl. She already has a whole new wardrobe with thigh highs and skirts for when she comes out.” Princess Daisy, who is described as a tomboy in the series and made her debut in 'Mario Tennis', has similarly been re-identified by the NY middle school teacher as “hella bisexual, polyamorous… and she will ask your girlfriend out right in front of you.” 

While the girls in the series got diversified gender identities, the boys’ also were given new gender and sexual orientations. Speaking about Mario, the eponymous character of ‘Super Mario’ video games, she said, “Mario… came out so long ago that most people forgot and he probably marched at Stonewall and he low-key says some transphobic stuff, but he means well.” Speaking about Luigi, Mario’s younger fraternal twin brother, she said, “Luigi is totally a demisexual dude, but he just calls himself queer because it’s like too confusing. He has big bi-wife energy. Trans? Trans. And it’s probably bisexual, but like, idoesn’t think about it too much because if you don’t think about it, it’s not a problem,”

When asked about the slides, she replied, “As part of my DOE employment, despite being primarily hired as an English Teacher, teaching our established and vetted sex education curriculum was not only something I was hired for, it was something I was trained and qualified in.” However, Elliott deleted the video after the backlash she received.

‘It’s not a teachers position to interfere with a child’s gender’

Netizens did no t hold back while giving their opinion on the matter, as one person tweeted, “I thought Peach and Mario were an item?” Another tweet read, “Uh, no. Peach and Mario are a thing, so she’s obviously not a lesbian.” Another fan said, "First of all peach got/loves that major Mario D... I finished the game so I know."

Some of them slammed the teacher, as a person tweeted, "Again, teachers need to teach, not preach about gender, sex or anything else. That is not their job, but they seem to think it is." "The staff should be fired. It’s not a teachers position to interfere with a child’s gender. It’s the parents position to have that conversation," another person added. In a similar vein, another person tweeted, "Still think all the stuff needs to be between child and parent. Teachers sticking their nose in there is just them pushing their agenda."
