Oscars 2022: Jane Campion wins Best Director, fans relieved she had a 'written speech'
Jane Campion became the third female director to win Best Director for 'The Power of the Dog', however, fans were relieved that she had written speech
The 94th Academy Awards kicked off with much fanfare on Sunday, March 27, at 8 pm EST, and saw some of the biggest names of the entertainment industry getting recognized for their stupendous work. The ceremony, which had three hosts this time around, took place at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, where the show is usually held.
All eyes were set on the Best Director category as it included some of the finest filmmakers of this generation and it was Jane Campion who won the accolade for her movie 'The Power of the Dog'. She is the third female filmmaker to win the Best Director trophy after Kathryn Bigelow and Chloe Zhao ('Nomadland'). Jane Campion, who mesmerized everyone with the movie ‘The Power of the Dog’ faced stiff competition and went up against the likes of Steven Spielberg (‘West Side Story’), Kenneth Branagh (‘Belfast’), Paul Thomas Anderson (‘Licorice Pizza’), and Ryusuke Hagamuchi (‘Drive My Car’).
The filmmaker from New Zealand thanked everyone who supported her during the movie, including the stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi-Smit McPhee. During her speech, she said, "I love directing because it's a deep dive into story, yet the task of manifesting a world can be overwhelming. The sweet thing is I'm not alone."
This is also the first time that the best director Oscar has gone to women in back-to-back years after Chloé Zhao won for 'Nomadland' last year.
Although fans were really thrilled after the win, they also thanked god for Campion bringing a "written" speech after her comments on the Williams Sisters at the Critics' Choice Awards went viral on social media. One of the fans wrote, "Netflix making absolutely sure Jane Campion wrote a speech this time." Another social media user wrote, "I see Jane Campion learned and came PREPARED with a written speech tonight. Good choice and congrats girl!"
