Oregon woman with mental illness ABANDONS baby after giving birth on cold sidewalk
An unidentified Oregon woman gave birth on the sidewalk of a Portland street on Wednesday, March 9, and abandoned the baby before walking away. According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers and first responders received a report that a woman had given birth to a baby on the sidewalk near SW 13th and Market St. shortly before 11 am.
"Someone just gave birth and left the baby here. Mom is walking away bleeding," an unidentified caller told 911. Officer Kirby-Glatkowski and his partner were around the area in search of a serial burglar when they received the call. "It's a cold day, it wasn't raining at that moment, but it was raining earlier and the sidewalk at Southwest 13th and Market is no place to deliver a baby alone. They said the mother, the woman, was stumbling away eastbound on Market with a lot of blood and amniotic fluid all over her," Kirby-Glatkowski told Koin-6.

"My partner and I went to try and engage her, contact her, talk to her see what was going on. We were able, with some additional resources on scene, get her stopped at about 12th and Market and get her into an ambulance and into a hospital for physical assessment and also address other issues. I can't believe, frankly, that that happened and I'm glad we have safe of a resolution as possible today," added Kirby-Glatkowski.
"At 10:47, BOEC dispatched AMR and Portland Fire to a report of a baby being born on the sidewalk at SW 13th Ave and SW Market St. Police were dispatched as well when it was reported the mom left the baby on the sidewalk and walked away. Central Bike Squad rode there to assist other officers. A bike officer went and checked on the baby, a newborn girl, being cared for by AMR paramedics. The mother was not cooperative with police or medical and was taken to hospital on a mental health evaluation. The newborn was transported by ambulance to a local children's hospital. Thank you to the community members who saw this take place, immediately covered up the baby, and called 911. #portland #portlandoregon #pdx #downtownportland #police #paramedic," PPB Central Bike Squad posted on Instagram.
As per the police, the mother appeared to be undergoing a mental health episode and was uncooperative. She was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation. The paramedics confirmed that the newborn baby girl was in good health and was taken to a local children's hospital. Authorities told KOIN-6 that PPB's Behavioral Health Unit has been in touch with the woman in the past.
