ATHENS, GEORGIA: University of Georgia football players were involved in a massive car wreck last Sunday, January 15, which tragically claimed the lives of a Georgia offensive lineman, Devin Willock, and a recruiting staff member, Chandler LeCroy. The wreck happened at around 2.45 am in Athens after a 2021 Ford Expedition "failed to negotiate a left curve" and slammed into two poles and trees before coming to a stop against an apartment building, said Athens-Clarke County police.

Multiple people dialed the emergency services in the moments after the accident took place and the scene was described as 'horrifying' to the police authorities. One call even said that the accident and its repercussions sounded like "multiple gunshots going off in the streets", according to TMZ. One 911 caller told dispatch the crash left a power line down and "all the electricity keeps exploding out here." "There's been three different explosions," the caller said. "Oh my God, there's another one!"

"There are arcing wires, there's people on the floor, it's a crashed vehicle. We think someone might be dead", a separate caller told dispatch. One woman said that she could not even open her home's door as she was located in the same apartment building where the car skidded into. The crash also injured another football player, Warren McClendon, and another UGA staffer, Victoria Bowles.

Georgia marked its 65-7 rout of TCU in the national championship game with a parade through town and a ceremony at Sanford Stadium on Saturday, January 14. Willock, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Chandler LeCroy, 24, was taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.

“We are all heartbroken and devastated with the loss of Devin Willock and Chandler LeCroy,” Georgia coach, Kirby Smart, said in a statement according to NBC News. “Devin was an outstanding young man in every way. He was always smiling, was a great teammate and a joy to coach.” Smart said LeCroy was “a valuable member of our football staff and brought an incredible attitude and energy every single day,” adding, “We grieve with their families for this tragic loss and will support them in every way possible.”

“The entire Georgia family is devastated by the tragic loss of football student-athlete Devin Willock and football staff member Chandler LeCroy,” the school’s statement said according to the outlet. “Devin and Chandler were two special people who meant so much to the University of Georgia, our football program and our athletic department. We ask that everyone keep their families in your prayers during this very difficult time.”

Authorities are still trying to find out what contributed to the incident and it remains under investigation.
